Why do you think it's important to join veterans' organizations?

It seems as though fewer and fewer people are joining veterans' organizations these days, even as more pop up. Do you think it's important for people to join them? Why?

When I’m at the PX at Nellis Air Force Base or at other locations across the country, I often hear a group of new veterans discussing whether or not they should join one of the national veterans’ organizations. Although there are many veterans’ organizations to join, most are composed of older veterans.

Member, Board of Directors for National Veterans Transition Service, Inc. (NVTSI). Helping Veterans successfully transition from the battlefront to the home front, NVTSI is a San Diego-based 501(c)(3) dedicated to assisting veterans in their reentry. We accomplish this by providing an early-stage cognitive-behavioral educational intervention, via a 3-week intensive workshop – REBOOT – followed by related mentoring and other services. Chairman, Board of Directors, Victory for Veterans - As the Chairman of the Board provide strategic leadership and vision toward the mission of Victory for Veterans to fund non-profits serving Veterans experiencing the emotional challenges of PTSD, depression, loneliness, anger and others that often can trigger joblessness and lead to homelessness. These factors are partial explanations for the high suicide rate among Veterans, currently around 22 per day. Check out the website:

I think there are many reason that veterans should be a part of professional Organizations but the problem is that the younger veterans don't want to join the older organization because they don't want to change anything. A lot of these Organization do it the way they been doing for years and the older guys don't get along with the newer or younger guys, kind of like pride thing of WARS. I seen other Organization not military related trying to bring military folks and are pretty successful at it. Some Organization are just after your buck and not after your fellowship. Until I find a good Organization for now I will just fellowship and support events but until then I am no brother or Son of no Organization. The other thing I seen is the service members spouse as members and kids but the service member hardly comes around to support the organization. What's wrong with that picture?

I joined the VFW as a life member because they a VFW VSO helped me with my VA claim. I am a Member at Large, and have never visited a Post.
