So, because a Soldier can or is unwilling to raise their individual qualifications the Army should lower its standards? Those days are over.

The General Technical score measures an individual's word knowledge, paragraph comprehension, and arithmetic reasoning...people can increase these by getting some more education.

Additionally, the 'doesn't take standardized tests well' is a complete cop out. If you'd like to be an Army officer (even our NCOES are changing), you should be able to demonstrate education through standardized tests...which all goes back to the comprehension of word knowledge, paragraph comprehension, and arithmetic reasoning thing.

What do you think is a 'fair' quantifiable score for one of the Army's commissioning programs...or should they even have one, and why?

SGM,

I am currently a SSG in the army and I respect we have to disagree. Only because I have a bachelors degree and I am in the process of obtaining my masters but because I try to retake be as ASVAB so many times before when I was a young soldier I am now unable to retake the test and now I cannot drop a OCS packet

SGM,

I am currently a SSG and I must respectfully have to disagree. Only because I have taken the ASVAB three times prior when I was a young soldier I am now unable to retake the test and obtain a higher score to drop a OCS packet. And the downside about the whole thing is I have a bachelors degree and I am currently in the process of obtaining my masters.

SGM I have to disagree with you, I am a SSG with a Masters Degree, and not some piece of cake degree through AMU. All I did was read and write multiple papers and graduated with a 3.75 GPA but I can not seem to get my GT score to a 110. So I go out work my butt off for an education level higher then a lot of officers and the military cant help at all? that's the cop out. SGM I also did not use any military funding for any of my education expenses, I worked two jobs plus the reserves the whole time in school.

While the GT score serves as a metric to measure future performance, there is a more concerning matter that everyone ignores and that is the lack of transparency when reporting the scores. For example, questions from the AR sections can be graded anywhere from 1-3 points, but the millitary doesn't report if the question was graded as a 1 point or as a 3 point. With all due respect but if you dont show me exactly how you are grading my performance, that makes me question the system. Will my score and possibility of becoming an officer be at the discretion of a high ranked officer?? This is really concerning...

I don't think this requirement is bad. The army supplies a 6 to 8 week course here at Fort Hood to enable you to attain that 110 or higher GT Score. I am sure most post provides this also.

Agreed! That is a very successful program and we should all encourage our Soldiers to attend the class if they are able and willing to improve their QT.

is it possible for a person in the reserves to attend that school if they live in Iowa. Can I attend on orders?

I have done the GT improvement course and went from a 98 to a 124. Of course this was 16 years ago. Its a easy low impact class and the Army should maintain a 110 standard. What I believe needs to be done is this standard needs to be enforced! I have looked at thousands of ERB's and seen mid 90 GT scores on most. When I ask why don't you do GT improvement the same answer. Why? What's up with that?? The standard is 110 but if you don't have it the impact is low....I was not allowed to go to the E-5 board until I got that 110! So start with that NCO's!!! Soldier wants to go to the board get a 110 same with WLC, ALC and SLC. 6-8 weeks, 2hrs a day and on JBLM you can pick morning or afternoon.

Listen, If that Soldier wants it. I mean really wants it then he/she will perform to standard. Don't relax the min standards for anyone! Let me flip it on you. He is your best you say, so instead of GT lets go with the 70-70-70 Drill Sergeant school APFT Grad requirement. Or, the 3 mile boot run that most Special schools require in 18 min. Again, If that troop really wants it then that Soldier will make it a high priority to get it done! Push them harder SSG!!!

The GT score measures paragragh comprehension, word knowledge and basic math skills that we use everyday. As a former instructor of a GT improvement program I realized there is an abundance of soldiers who were lacking these basic skills and needed to learn how to improve them. Do we want NCOs who do not now how to comprehend what they are reading correctly, decipher words meaning or cannot do basic math? Lowering standard is is not the answer. In the civilian sector other forms of test is given to measure specific skill sets.

I concur, I had an NCO, who we flexed the DA6 ( We work shift work as MP's) and he went from 89 only to 97. I got a stern talking to and raised eyebrows by by the CSM and the 1SG's on his SSG Board. As an MP I see first hand how the need for comprehension, word knowledge and math come into play. The Army lowered the standards back in 05' and we are paying the price. The problem also I am now running into is I have shake and bake SPC 4's ( college grads) coming in already with a BA/BS degree with only 90-98 GT scores. The O' corps wouldn't take them and this is a continuing trend due to job market and enlistments. Very frustrating because they get the upfront WLC Slots earlier than some Soldiers who deserve it who came up from PV1 to SPC and know their job just a bit better and have 1-2 years experience to boot.

I have recently changed branches from USMC to USAR and my GT dropped 5 points. I had a 110 in the corps and the Army dropped my score to a 105. why is this? who makes this decision? Where can I find the reference to my answer?
