So my cost in very little.
3) Also people think you have to wear anodized medal and that is not true, Yes they look nice but at least for me I like the ones out of the box they have a lot more character. (note: I also do not use the one that was awarded to me I keep those in box and have them put in a safe place I buy a replacement to mount).
4) I own the Dress Mess and use miniature medal on that and again personal preference use ones sold at PX.
5) I know at balls I have attended when my troops have seen that set up they all say they wanted to do the same and a few have done it. If you gander at AR 670-1, para 22-2a says "Commanders may require the wear of authorized awards on the follow occasions:" such as parades, reviews, funerals, social occasions, etc. para 22-7 references the PAM. Now, DA PAM 670-1, para 22-7(a), states that "all personnel may wear full-sized decorations and service medals on the service/dress uniform".

With that in mind, from when I was a private, I was always told that NCOs wear medals, and officers do not, except if part of a ceremonial unit like in a funeral or something. After 25+ years in, I would have to agree with the above, that maybe the biggest factor is money. Medals aren't cheap, and they cost to get them set up. On the other hand, most senior officers that I know wear the Dress Mess that have the mini-medals and therefore full size is not an issue. I hope I get an opportunity to wear my full size one day. Shame to have them just sitting in my drawer and not proudly display them. However yes you do run out of space rather quickly. I think many people are hesitant because of that and unlike the Marines, when they wear medals, ribbons that do not have a medal that has been struck for it, the Marines will wear them on the right side of the uniform with the unit awards in order of their precedence according to DoD. Yes they are heavy, yes they jingle jangle but when put together right they bring out a level of "full military glory" that you just do not get when wearing ribbons. You wear ribbons to courts martial, ribbons to inspections, ribbons for payday activity. Your spouse or significant other only gets to see you when you are wearing the "grey digits" or with just your ribbons. Show them your shiny medals hanging from your jacket every once in a while.

As for being expensive, yes, they are a bit pricey. But everyone should have been issued a medal with their first award. Yes a lot of Soldiers do not get them through lack of stock or just plain old not knowing. Go into your supply rooms and and I guarentee that most of the medals you need are stuffed in a dusty box and the clerk keeps ordering more.

Being humble does not mean hiding what you have EARNED. If the Army says you have it, wear it to the big functions!

Shoot, Soldiers coming in the Army are already going to have at LEAST the GWOT and NDM. Even the SPC who cannot seem to get an award will get a GCM after three years. When the wars are over (and hopefully soon) first thing to go will be the combat patches, then in about 3-4 years most of the veterans. Everyone in the army that gets a medal/award is issued the first one in a box. If soldiers just saved it, bought a special full size medal rack and just assembled as they went it wouldn't be an issue. That and comb through your battalions supply rooms, I guarantee that hey have boxes of medal sets collection dust. At least for the ARCOM, AAM, GCDM, GWOT, GOWTE. Maybe even nation defense and a few of the higher ones. I ran through two battalions supply shops to get medal sets for Soldiers and NCOs would wanted to wear the full
Sized medals. The resource is there, you just have to look for it. If they don't have it for free, consider it a very small price for living the part of the Army community. If
You re upped at least once you are a professional Soldier, become familiar and learn to enjoy the military only functions. So your a professional Soldier, at this point you have bought into the lifestyle. Don't shirk going to any of the functions, balls, right arm nights, even frg meeting are important. The biggest thing that makes the army suck, and it does some of the time, is just dealing with the people in the army who don't want to be there.

Anyways
Long rant. Enjoy! When I was between my "A" School in Orlando and shipping up to Submarine school in Connecticut, I was tasked out to the Base First Lieutenant, which meant I did base Colors, Color Guards, and funeral details. I ALWAYS wore my full-sized medals (had 3 at the time and 2 of them were for marksmanship, lol). When I got married the first time (c'mon, we've all served, we know sometimes that shit just doesn't work out, lol), I wore full-sized medals and ribbons (it's a Navy thing). When I went to the 100th Anniversary Submarine Ball, I wore full-sized medals and ribbons. To me, the Navy Dress Blue Uniform aka "Cracker Jacks" don't look right with mini-medals. Yes they are authorized and appropriate, however, they are also expensive and until relatively recently not available for purchase privately. I also, suspect the fact that each one had to be individually pinned to,the uniform made it easier to simply wear the ribbons.
Also, some badges would, not be visible if the medals were worn, as there is no alternative display option.
Given the above the ribbons offer the easiest option and permit all authorized badges to be worn as well.
I wore ribbons with my formal blues with bow tie and mini-medals with my Mess Dress. It's very expensive to buy and mount what consists of a lot of medals. And, of course, as soon as you do all that, you get another one right in the middle of what you've already gotten mounted. 2. It's very noisy, if that gives you any idea how many of those things are awarded to service members nowadays. 3. In my opinion, again, in MY opinion, it's a little showboat-ish, for lack of a better term. It makes one look like a heavily-decorated war hero even when that may not be the case. Even if that is the case, it's what I'd call an overabundance of riches, especially from the point of view of first-termers.

Just like with ribbons, I elected to wear only the top row (three ribbons or five medals) on the rare occasion I actually trotted them out. Mini-medals are okay, but again, too many of those things is a little awkward for my liking. I was literally just thinking the other day when the last time I wore full medals was on active duty, and I really can't remember. I think it was either at the beginning of my Seabee battalion tour (2001-02) or perhaps even earlier during my first overseas tour in Japan (1996--98). Perhaps even on recruiting duty, 1998-2000. It's hard to say because the occasion to wear full medals is fairly uncommon and not one I took advantage of very often. My two cents. I always get a lot of great comments. The only time that I have seen others wear medals was an odd Audie Murphie ball that I was invited to.
The expense part is kind of invalid. Standard medals are about 10 bucks a piece, give or take. The problem is 1) education, as many do not know that they can actually wear them and 2) don't want to make the effort.
For myself, I bought mine early on in my career and the expense was minimal, and have added them over time. To buy them all at once would cost about 500 bucks. For those interested, medalsofamerica.com do great work and have fast turnaround time, and I highly recommend them. Chances are the uniform is blues. Usually full sized medals are worn. Things like ribbon only awards PUC, NUCS, CARS Or Combat Action Ribbons are worn to the right. Medals on the right. In the Navy, when I was in, when in full dress, you wear medals if your award has a medal. If your award does not have a medal , you wear the ribbons on your right side while wearing your medals on your left. Formal affairs requiring Medals, you wear them. Wearing ribbons only for a formal affair was never an option offered to us. Ribbons were for daily wear depending on the uniform of the day. I do have miniature medals, I wear them on my Prince Charlie when wearing my kilt to a formal affair when representing the Scottish American Military Society (SAMS). Honest reason is the pure cost to have them professionally mounted. We're talking $100 plus just for the mounting not to mention the cost of the stars. Honestly, by year 18 it was a syndical laughing point to receive an award and my peers and I would all laugh "how much is your remounting up to now?"

So truly, unless it's a hyper important event, professionally set ribbons are sufficient. Don't judge. We service members do not get reimbursed for medals mounting. The uniform allowance does not take that into consideration. Response by PO1 Don Uhrig made Aug 20 at 2021 10:55 PM 2021-08-20T22:55:05-04:00 2021-08-20T22:55:05-04:00 MSG Thomas Currie 7206404

The simple fact is that the vast majority of enlisted soldiers don't even own a set of full size medals mounted for wear. Sure, you (usually) get handed the full size medal and the ribbon, but the issue medals are barely suitable for wear if you have just a single medal. If you have more than one medal, the issue medals are totally unsuitable for wearing on the uniform. You need to buy a set of professionally mounted medals if you want them to look right. (OK, yes, it may be possible to buy just the rack and mount them yourself, but generally that doesn't work nearly as well for medals as it does for ribbons.)

As several people have mentioned, cost is certainly a major factor. My own rack of professionally mounted full size medals (not anodized, because I prefer the look of the regular medals) would cost $297.64 plus tax and shipping - and that doesn't include one device that I would have to get elsewhere and install myself. A set of miniatures would be $179.22. Meanwhile my ribbon rack would be just $51.80 despite having three more ribbons that don't have medals. Which do you suppose I would have more occasions to wear? Depending on you actual duty, it's more or less optional, but frankly, if your unit fell in with only ribbons, and you wore medals, well aside from looking different, you might be told to not wear them (uniformity).
SFC Private RallyPoint Member gives a great example of why, and under what circumstance it's not a bad idea to go "Full Dress." Response by SSG Bill McCoy made Aug 22 at 2021 1:13 PM 2021-08-22T13:13:52-04:00 2021-08-22T13:13:52-04:00 MAJ Michael Kammerer 7312833

It was always “suggested” that we didn’t wear metals unless you were in Mess Dress.
