Why don't we thank our men and women in harm's way on our streets? Why are our police treated so direspectfully?

They are called names, shot and spend their shifts on guard. Why are they not supported more in their efforts to keep us safe in the homeland?

Because, for the last the 8 years, our President and his administration never support law enforcement. Rather, they chose to support everyone but the police. Col Rebecca Lorraine. All President Obama had to do, was get on TV tell America, attacks on Police were not acceptable, and would not be tolerated. But, instead he chose to take the side of everyone but our police. In so doing he exacerbated the attitude of distrust, disdain, and hate towards the only thing that keeps us from anarchy... The Thin Blue Line.

the division became worse because of people like Obama put all police officer as being the same . to stand up and call the police stupid . to call the family of a person shot by police when it was shown to be a good shot. . but of course any time any one said anything against Obama or Black life matter we had to be big bad racists .. I do not give a fuck what colour you are .. when you disrespect police as a whole you are part of the problem. and when you have people plotting to murder you and other screaming fuck the police .. hell you is is us vs them .. it is me going home or them ..

SSG(P) (Join to see) - small departments experience the same large scale incidents as big cities. Would you rather have the citizens of the city be overrun with lawlessness if a riot, or mass anarchy begins? How about an extremely large group 100+ attempting to take over a large city with a force the size of 10-20? Should the cops just give up what they are sworn to uphold? Then there are mass shootings....why can't cops, who are trained on the same weapon platforms as most Special Operations Teams, trained with/by and consist of former military who can operate that equipment, and lack full funding to support a expensive piece of equipment for safety available to them? Not sure if read, heard any large headlines there SSG, but I can tell you "IT" happens. Fort Hood, TX; San Bernardino, CA ; Aurora, CO; Sandy Hook, CT; Orlando, FL; Eric Dorner incident (former Navy); Dallas, TX, and the list goes on and on....not to mention the last few cops who have been executed by radicalists.
So it should be the cops who reform to the population and bend the laws to work for criminals? That sounds extremely radical to me! Have you ever been on a ride along with a street cop? Corrections Officer is not a street cop and you probably don't understand the day to day incidents, just as a street cop doesn't understand a CO's day to day incidents. Obviously you changed profession so what caused this change in the way you see the law being executed?
No cop wants to shot anyone, none of them! Nobody wants the burden of knowing one of the citizens they were sworn to serve/safekeep/protect lost their life by their hand.....why does it still happen? It's people who refuse to obey the lawful orders, whether right or wrong at the time-perceived by the officer at that time-and believe the rule of law doesn't apply to them. Check up on the laws bud. You see 99% of all officers involved in a shooting cleared because a million other cops would have done the exact same thing if in their shoes at that moment, or be dead! Case law! That's not changing! Instead of fearing the cops, wave-say hi, thank them for their service, even continued service of Our Country for most cops. You get thanked right?
Do you serve/protect people? Wouldn't you want the best equipment available to you and your Troops to do a thankless dangerous job? Don't you want to return to your family after each shift so your children don't have to grow up without a father/mother? Or wife/husband a widow/widower?
Who's the enemy you ask? Those that stand against the Laws created by elected officials, and carried out by street cops-just like your orders given by commanders in the military. I choose to have cops come home each night, I don't care who thinks "it's scary"! Cops aren't trying to occupy someone's home, town, city, or state! They were sworn by those elected officials to succeed in a mission, keep law and order in place in small cities with little funding. Most cops buy their own equipment for Murphy's Law!
Good luck to you- I will always hope for your safe return from deployments, and regardless of opinion, I THANK YOU for your service!

SFC Weatherby: You make some good arguments. However, I am and have been a news-junkie from a very early age. With the exception of Juarez being taken over by drug cartels, I have not heard of criminals taking over any American small towns and executing the police force. Is it good to be prepared? Of course. But how much is enough, or too much? I do know that almost every police cruiser has a shotgun and an AR-15 in it when needed. Having police use and display heavy firepower is good for the police, but harms police - community relations, and the community policing programs that may be established in those communities. If the people fear the police, they will not cooperate, thus denying police the HUMINT that comes from people and places that the police cannot hope to get close to, and the cooperation that may come from trusting the police. History has shown that rule by intimidation does not work over the long term. Do I care about police lives? Of course I do. They deal with stuff that no one should have to. But they, as appointed agents of the government, must balance force with cooperation. Just as the military is bound to its own rules and regulations. Just like our government creates terrorists each time we kill someone unnecessarily overseas, the police create enemies when they abuse their powers and authority as well. It's all a very delicate balance of power and responsibility.

Ma'am as a police officer in Dallas myself I must admit that this is the most frustrating thing that we deal with. I can take the fights and violence and all the horrible things that we see, but after that is all done to then have normal people berate and scream at me like I did something wrong ... it is completely backwards.

I work private security when I'm not doing Drills, and I regularly work with LEO's. So much so I've gotten to learn names, and to find out quite a few are Veterans or are currently serving in the National Guard or Reserves.
I've come to find out that many of the local vagrants and criminal elements find me worse than the Police, because I snitch on them to the Police but I'm worse because as I work security I'm far better at snitching. One phrase I recall was something to the effect of, "How you gonna do me like dat security! You be snitchin too much! or "You ain't a Cop you can't be snitchin like dat!". There's more but it goes into a lot of profanity.
I think we went through a generation or so that wasn't really taught respect for the law. I think part of it is not teaching it in school. My mother recalls taking something similar to Administration of Justice which is a College course in High School, I took no such course in school. Maybe we are just not teaching people respect as best we could as a Nation.
