Why is it so difficult to be a woman in the military? Especially if you do well for yourself. Sailor of the quarter, then sailor of the year, she had to do something with a higher up to get where she is. Do all people think women put their assets before their career? Pretty, confident, then hardworking.. Can hardworking never be first?

I've always considered my female peers in the military as walking a "leadership tightrope". If she seems too masculine, her peers will wonder if "she'd rather be a boy". If she acts too feminine, her peers will wonder why she wants to be a part of the world's superpower military. None of her male peers come under the same microscopic degree of review. We can all learn from the highly successful women progressing thru our Military Services because they have greater leadership hurdles to overcome than her male counterparts.

That and it can be very isolating.
There are four female junior officers at my command. That's pretty much the extent of my options for socializing with my co-workers.
If I were to hang out with the guys outside work it would likely just lead to the rumor mill assuming "there something more going on between them", despite me being happily married.

PO1 (Join to see), it is the same for men. Oh he got X of Qtr, X of the Year, insert award here because he is buddies with X,Y,Z or is the unit "golden child", or any number of excuses. People are really that petty at times and jealous of others success.

It is the same for any minority of an organization. The actions of a few paint the stereotypes of the many. It is hard because a few have made bad choices in the past and even the present that make it that way. We have to overcome the choices of those before us. Some pave the way for us, others build walls on the path. Overcome the wall and blaze a new trail.

I was gonna say that but even saying it in itself makes me worry about what others might say (oh he's pulling the race card). My philosophy is simple: be the best so no one has room to talk you-know-what
