Why is it so hard to find a career? My MOS, 12B, is not highly transferable.

I work every day, and everyday i answer this question....
You are looking at backwards.... Its not the MOS, is your service that prospective employers are looking for. Yes, some MOS are directly transferable, but 9 of 10 times, you employer is looking for a few attributes groomed by the armed services.
1. Your ability to be in charge, and take charge.
2. Your ability to complete a task with minimal /no supervision.
3. Your ability to make a decision, implement it, and do better next time.
These are just a few things employers look for... These are the attributes you need to highlight.

You have to translate it into civilian speak. Leadership (who you were responsible for), Accountability (what you were responsible for) etc.

SPC Joseph you are in better shape then you may think. . My Navy skills (ejection seat expert on fighter aircraft) didn't transfer to the civilian world. But the leader ship skills and problem solving skills learned in the Navy led to a very nice life as a Snap-On Tool dealer.

Thanks for the info Sp5 Conley but airlines don't use ejections seats. I did work for McDonnell Douglas (which was bought out by Boeing) for 5 years before leaving for Snap-On. At 70 years old I'm a little bit old anyway.

Yes SPC Joseph it is a franchise. My point is that you have a lot of skills that will payoff for you in the civilian world. I wish you all the luck.

SPC Joseph- regarding your question on transferability! I could not agree more with Trooper Carpenter and all other troopers who are spot-on with their quite valuable advice for you. A soldier who is retired or who will ETS., should find that he/she will require one very important document when maneuvering in todays job market- yes, a re`sum`e which should be well written, makes sense and captures everything. The civilian market today seems to really love our Veterans. I realized after I retired, I had no clue as to how to write my own re`sum`e and so I sought assistance from other brother soldiers. I wrote and rewrote my re`sum`e so many times, I actually enjoyed writing after my trials and errors and found I was quite good at it.
I have been writing Government style re`sum`es part time now for over 14 years - of course its not free of charge. Finally, if you have NCO EERs., this is where I recommend you begin- you should find all of your leadership accomplishments, your achievements and all other pertinent information required. Finally, while you are reviewing positions available, try not to make the mistake in which many of us probably have made in the past- let the hiring official tell you that they are not interested or that you are not qualified for a specific position- never convince yourself that you are not qualified and just forget about that position. Send your re`sum`e in and give it a shot. Happy Hunting brother Trooper!

CPO Emmett (Bud) Carpenter If you ever want some side work I would love for you to install some ejection seats in the passenger and rear seats of my car. I have a funny feeling knowing that you are one more nag away from a 3 second rocket ride will keep the passenger and back set driver silent.
