Consider the taboos in modern American society, and this can be a serious issue. For instance, the Europeans are very comfortable with their sexuality, while Americans are forever condemned by the morales. Then, Hollywood enters the picture and all rules are thrown out the door. Thus, we are seriously confused as to what is acceptable and unacceptable. One has to recall that if one desires to view porn, when one is in their private home, this is okay. But, if there is an investigation, all of this will come out. The bottom line is that the porn industry is considered taboo, and thus there is a serious fascination with it.

I never thought about it like that because porn has always been around in war back to soldiers smuggling Playboy on deployment and moral groups coming to service troops to keep up moral. It's more about the individual really, I've deployed many times and never had issues on deployment but have friends who never deployed and cheat all the time, porn just keeps your urges at bay

While I can understand the potential of any addiction to compromise a soldier's readiness, I don't think porn is the end all, family shattering threat to partner faithfulness. I think a lot more contributing factors lead to adultery: loneliness, distance, personal dissatisfaction, etc. It seems it's far more likely porn addiction is a symptom, rather than the cause of adultery.

I guess on the list of addictions, porn might not be as bad as some and I would not use the word 'popular' with any addiction. Why is it so prevalent? Because of the high number of singles in their late teens and early twenties. I think the source of the 'much worse things' is the same disease that is causing the addiction to porn and adultery...symptoms of the same disease, not separate diseases.

Correlation/Causation?

Any habit or addiction can be detrimental if it ADVERSELY affects the individual. It doesn't matter if you are starting at stamps, cat videos, or erotica. The assumption that one type of addiction however will lead to another type of addiction needs actual proof though.

We understand that some things are considered more or less societally acceptable than others, however that does not necessarily mean that they will become "gateways" to worse behavior. Smokers don't necessarily become crack addicts. Weigh Lifters don't automatically start using steroids. Therefore why would we assume a linkage between pornography and adultery?

There is a correlation between the two. However, it really depends on the individual and his/her situation. The more you watch porn, the more you think you can do what they do in those films. Going further, the more you watch the films, the more you wish your spouse looks like & acts like those actors & actresses in those films. Couple that with the amount of "work" we do in a day, we use that as a crutch against our spouses who stay at home and watch the kids. You feel entitled. You want sex now a certain way and your spouse does not want to do it the way they do it in porn. Everyone whose answered this question can say, its easy to stop watching it and/or do something else, well I counter that argument and say, we're all in the Army and we all know the phrase "there's always that one."

Are there proven studies from respected parties to prove the connection between porn and adultery? Honestly, porn can be a healthy outlet for people that are under significant stress and force segregated (perceptions, adultery, fraternization, etc.) As usual, you can have to much of a good thing where someone may develop an addiction or have difficulty separating fantasy from reality. That or abuse of government systems would require leadership intervention.

I'm much more concerned about the rampant use of tobacco products, energy drinks, and unhealthy eating habits. Each of those will quickly hurt a soldiers health and effect our ability to accomplish the mission.

If you drill down at least for men its not just about watching - I think for men porn is more about sexual gratification without any emotional baggage - don't have to love, respect or care - its all about using pron for instant self gratification.

Folks, whether you like it or, there is a lot of discussion about porn leading to unhappy significant others. Even to the point of considering divorce or adultery. I personally don't care if people watch porn or not as that is their choice to make. However, reasonable responses from significant others to their partner watching porn are:

* I am not attractive enough to keep my partner satisfied so he/she watches porn.

*I must not be good enough sexually to satisfy his/her needs.

Porn also has a tendency to make "hooking up" seem easier than it actually is. I'm not sure about you guys but when I delivered pizzas post high school I wasn't seduced by the hot woman in the house. Also, porn portrays women into being into sexual acts that a lot of women consider disgusting or revolting. This leads to partners feeling as if they can't satisfy those needs or that they are "boring" in comparison. Lastly, a lot of people consider watching porn to be the same as cheating as you are meeting your sexual needs via someone other than them. So while the question itself is a bit absurd on this forum it is not technically wrong. Lastly, how the average woman views porn in comparison to the average man is different so you can't just look at it from your side of the street since marriage is two-sided.

First off, addiction is prevalent in the military because addiction is a way to cope with all the crap that happens. Addiction is one way to help medicate negative emotions, cope with bad experiences, and to help alleviate stress. Service Members tend to experience more stressors than our civilian counterparts, hence addiction may be more prevalent in the military.

As to pornography as an addiction, there is a lot of credible research out there now on the negative effects of pornography on the individual and society. Pornography has been linked to human trafficking, increases in sexual assault, sexual dysfunction, just to name a few. Unfortunately this research is getting the same treatment that cancer research got in the '70s when smoking was linked to cancer. Check it out here:

Back in April 2009 I arrived at Kandahar Airfield as a contractor. We were staying in the nasty transit tents by the poo poo pond and there was a Marine that shared the space. I want to say it was an element from 2-8 Marines. Every night this Marine would lay in his cot watching porn in full view of everybody with the volume up. Even with the lights out. How hard up do you have to be that you can't control that urge. I mean come on. Which suggests to me some of the sexual assault that occurs in the military can be attributed to people like that.

As a Detailed Inspector General, I had a number of 'porn' related issues step into my office. In each of those cases, personal animosity was the igniting factor. In a fit of sheer petulance, an individual would walk over to the unoccupied computer of someone they disliked and bring up raw porno, leaving the screen lit up for viewing. Spotted by unsuspecting passersby, the computer's owner/user would then be facing severe counseling or UCMJ action. My team and I were able to determine the truth and hold the computer owner/user harmless. I referred the results of these problems up to my Two-Star. He immediately initiated a mandatory policy of logging out each and every time one stepped away from any computer for any reason. Best advice I can offer to any service member out there about the accessing of pornography or similar unrelated material in the workplace....don't.

The better question is "why is porn so popular in general?" Porn is a billion dollar industry. 86% of the military is male. 48% of the military is between the ages of 22-30. I find that people only commit adultery when something is lacking in their relationships, whether it be physical, emotional, whatever. Porn doesn't have anything to do with it unless someone becomes an actual addict.

Generally, it is popular among those who do not have other options for their natural sex drive and its effect... generally speaking... is as a substitute to adultery. It may lead to some other issues, like unrealistic expectations of what a "normal" person of the opposite sex "really" looks like... or how to properly value another person... or how to establish and keep a loving relationship where both parties are valued and nourished. But, it is not likely to be the incentive for adultery. Humans come predisposed... we don't need an excuse like porn to prove that we are flawed individuals.
