Late to the question but I've never heard of that happening for Federal holidays. So to my knowledge I don't know if my state(Maryland) will. What is the origins and history of this? of this?

Wichita is a city in Kansas. We go for more recognition of the deeper veteran needs that are ongoing and complex at times. Like rural veterans getting to urban hospitals in a timely manner. A proclamation also allows for recognition of organizations leaders, since they will be an on-going resource of help. The favorite part of this year will be the ROTC Honor Guard, with flags from all the services, to lead the Pledge of Allegiance before the commission meeting. That will be on TV and some will see a greater commitment and inspiration to our youth than perhaps the candy thrown during the Veterans Day parades. It was an easy procedure three weeks ago when all should have had veteran concerns in their hearts and heads.

I presume Maryland/DC/Virginia will probably just do parades for Veterans' day, but sadly, it may only get briefly mentioned on media, if at all. Sometimes just saying thank you to the veterans isn't enough and I've learned that it doesn't always make them feel grateful for the recognition depending on their individual circumstances. In those cases actions speak louder than words. I do feel that there are some things in place already that can physically and conceptually show veterans how much we appreciate their services. iHeart Media and Clear Channel radio has the "Show your Stripes" initiative. Their focus is eliminating veteran unemployment, promoting businesses to hire skilled veterans, and help placing veterans transitioning out into civilian jobs.
The VA does have the Veterans Choice Program now where vets can use private practitioners in case they live 40+ miles away from the nearest clinic, or have been waiting more than 30 days for care. But what you're doing in Wichita sounds much more personal and beneficial being on a community level. Respect.
