If it wasn&#39;t reflected in their NCOER the board won&#39;t even know about it. I had a couple CSMs tell me that is probably why I never got selected. I know they were kidding, but it just shows how common it is. Do you know how his Article 15 was filed? Did it go in His Personal File or was it put in his restricted File? Either way he should be good to overcome the infraction and compete for SFC. Back when I was in the 82nd, many, or even most NCOs had at least one article 15 somewhere in there past. The no defect army is winnowing out all the rough-n-tough fighting SOBs that we need to win wars. I made this SFC list and that situation happened to me, except I received a Summarized and it was not annotated on my NCOER, although it did affect my overall rating. I am now a SFC and about to retire. I would say it doesn&#39;t really matter as long as you are squared away afterward and seek to continually improve yourself. If you don&#39;t put much effort into that, then it might make a difference. I just decided I would be a better soldier and losing my cool was beneath my potential, so I worked my ass off trying to make myself a better soldier and demonstrate I had grown from the experience. I had a field grade article 15 in Korea for violating a pass policy. Was busted down to E5 with everything maxed. 8 months later I got my rank back. I eventually made SFC, CW2 and now retirement.
