It appears that Putin is staging this in a manner that Russia will be invited in. Russia has recognized two areas are independent states which gives them the right and ability to ask for foreign assistance. Like him or hate him but don't discount Putin, he is not stupid.

Personally, I feel we have been patient enough w/Putin. Why shouldn't we be ready in case we're needed. I know Russia has the saying "Ruled w/a Iron fist" but remember, Iron will bend when met w/enough force..

Russia has already invade the Ukraine. Twice. But they are doing it slowly. Putin is not an idiot. He realizes that no one wants s to go to real war, so he can take bite-size chunks out but by bit, pause to digest, and then take another bite or two. He knows that taking an ENTIRE country would be too much for world leaders to accept, so he is just taking parts.

I expect this to continue off and on until such time as the US and/or NATO start signaling more than just sanctions.

He annexed Crimea. Then he paused and waited. After a sufficient time for the world to more or less forget that Crimea belongs to Ukraine and accept the status quo, he began preparing for his next move.

He has now occupied Luhansk and Donetsk, and unilaterally declared them independent of the Ukraine. He will solidify his hold on these two regions, fortify them with Russian troops, and eventually "invite" them to join Russia, annexing those regions, as well. Then he will wait a few years, and take his next bite. The only consolation is that Putin is 69. He will likely die before he can finish the job.

Many people tend to forget past historical events such as the "Minsk Accord" wich ended the unrest in the Dombas region of Ukraine. Russia was helping to enforce the two regions of the Minsk agreement. We have been told to look how evil Russia is and there intent but it has been clearly stating a one sided narrative.

Reality check here. Ukraine has been a NATO "Partner" for some time. Geopolitically, it will never be a Member until there are long term changes in Russia to the extent that Russia won't care. Don't hold your breath. People forget that NATO wasn't formed to offset the USSR. NATO was pushed by the Sergeants of WWI who became the Generals of WW2. Europe had up to 1916 been going at each other's throat every 75 years since the 1300s. Now we saw them at it 20 years later in WW2. The idea was if you could get England, Germany, and France to protect each other, then maybe you could break the cycle. It was many years before Germany was allowed to have the head of NATO be one of theirs. So NATO was pretty much sorted out and the USSR essentially made it a stop talking and do it now thing. We have little strategic or commercial interest in the Ukraine. It's not worth going to war over. Putin wants to create the old Soviet buffer of proxy states. Putin has had over seven years to prepare end arounds for sanctions. The US and British sanctions only apply to a limited range of banking institutions. You'd have to get the G-10 approval to block access to the Swiss banks on down. I don't see that germinating yet. Strict port control and internet isolation would get Putin's attention more. Regardless, this will get much messier before it gets better. Only sure winning tactic is to get the Russian people to turn on Putin. That will require widespread suffering on their part to get to that point. So far, neither the US or NATO has implemented much that will achieve that objective in the near term.

If having a NATO member on his border was really a concern Putin should have invaded Finland which is only not a member because it doesn't want to be. There have been comparisons done between Ukraine, Afghanistan, and Taiwan. To be truthful, each one is different. With that said, there are also a number of similarities. I have not seen anybody draw a parallel between Ukraine and Korea, or Kuwait. There are similarities to those situations, as well.

There are a lot of people who say that Putin has "put his foot into it" and with good reason. Your military move can be considered a blunder if you are criticized for it even by Switzerland.

Some option might exit, here. One: Emergency entry into the EU. Two: Emergency entry into NATO. That should give Putin pause. Three: International Peacekeeping forces from the UN (the UN has already condemned Russia's actions).

The best action by the US would be to do what we do best: The US should use its enormous industrial power to supply Ukraine. (Kind of like a Berlin Airlift, only bigger...and, yes, we can). The Ukrainian people are proving to be quite plucky and determined. US support could tip the balance.

Three things that can be seen from space: China's Great Wall. Egypt's Great Pyramids. Volodymyr Zelensky's balls.

BLUF: Putin has threatened nuke escalation which froze Biden and NATO in their tracks. Now Putin has confirmed he can control NATO and Biden response. Putin has escalated his destruction targeting civilian populations, apartments, schools, hospitals, civilian routes out of the combat zones, nuclear power plants, etc. Putin is dedicated to the destruction of Ukraine. So the dynamics of the situation in the Ukraine has changed drastically since I originally posed this question. Russia has now fully committed its troops into a all out shooting war with the Ukraine. Despite what Putin claims, this is a war.

There has also been great violations of the Geneva Convention against use of deadly force on the civilian population and has also threatened the use of Weapons of Mass Destruction against the Ukrainian people as well as any nation who gets directly involved.

I understand the position our CIC has placed us in by showing his hand to the world in regards to not committing troops to aid the people of Ukraine which has indeed weakened our position to attempt to put a end to the wholesale slaughter and exodus taking place.

I do not believe that the use of sanctions against the nation of Russia will have any type of a deterring effect against Putin solely because there is, without a doubt, more money and supplies stashed away then the US or any other nation knows about. I think the only way that we will truly get Putin to the negotiations table is if we implement a simular tactic that we used against Cuba over the Cuban Missle Crises. A full and complete trade imbargo of all goods and services coming out and going into Russia.

Of course China and North Korea will never abide by such a drastic embargo, so they will continue to do business with Putin. BUT, the drop in revenue coming from NATO and UN countries will make his wallet run for cover.

I am curious though if we have forgotten the lessons that we learned from dealing with Germany in WWII? Hitler invades one country then promises that is as far as he will go. Then invades another country.. so on and so on till the world sits up and says enough is enough. Putin seems to be taking a page right out of Hitler play book and following his bloody example. So will America once again just sit back and watch as Europe burns until someone drops a bunch of bombs on the Pacific Fleet again forcing us into this conflict? I don't think even that would be enough.

First I think Putin is a “Punk” that should have his nose bloodied. He thinks he can just take over border countries without consequences. When it gets down to where the rubber meets the road he will think twice about using the nukes and I personally think his leadership would stop him in his tracks.
Although Russia has not revealed its latest war machines due to either their lack of numbers or hyped up propaganda, we would of slaughtered their military due to the apparent lack of war planning and training. Those long convoys would of been another “turkey shoot” for our A-10s.
Regardless of how Putin is decimating Ukraine, I also believe they will push Russia out of Ukraine completely and continue sending body bags to Putin.

I don’t know when this question was posted. The conflict that Russia has started has opened up a real running sore with all of the FORMER SOVIET REPUBLICS (FSR) that are now members of NATO.

The Biden Administration and Congress are reacting to events…not leading in any sense of the word. The people who are spending money like drunken sailors on a Liberty Call in Olongapo are focused on the most disgusting and dangerous social engineering goals that is resulting low moral, suicides and desertions.

The FRUIT LOOP MILITARY that is being created will self correct over time. This is the problem for the United States. In Europe, the memories and experiences of the FSR members of NATO will carry their own fight all the way to Moscow on their own because everyone over the age of 50 remembers the secret police, consumer good shortages and political domination of the Russians from 1920 to until 1991.

No one is going “backwards” to allow Russia any kind of dominant political, economic or military influence over countries that have been COMMUNIST FREE for over 30 years.

Well here we are 100 days in. Big issue now is the food that Ukraine produces and the fact the Russians have it bottled up and add to that the US wheat crop has suffered cutting production.

Its not beyond the possible scope that NATO or the US will not intervene to ensure that grain shipments from UKRAINE will return to normal.

Typical comment considering the republicans tried to overthrow the US government along with trump and his crew of inept congressmen. When was the last time a republican president either decreased the deficit or added jobs or created hope for any American except the wealthy or the white supremist, even the uneducated people don’t know their lives aren’t better. I believe that since, we as a NATO member, should rely on NATO to protect its members.
The U.S. can’t financially afford to fund any direct actions against Russia. Our current top impotent military leadership is also not qualified to run such actions!
