Maybe ... MREs don't have an expiration date, but they do have a manufacture date. They are supposed to be good stored at 80F for at least three years. Of course if stored in a cool dry place, the timeline can be extended. if the package is intact and not swollen it's likely OK. It is worth noting that the main meal and the candy will last longer that the cheese spread, PB etc. It should go without saying if it smells or tastes "off," toss it.

Not for nothing, we were still eating WWII vintage C rats when I was in.

Possibly. It ultimately depend on its condition and the condition it was stored in. There are plenty of YouTube channels dedicated to this very thing. I’ve watched guys eat rations from Vietnam and older but it depends on a lot of factors.

I was in basic in 1997. Our MREs featured M&Ms with an Olympic themed wrapper....

If the MRE was stored properly, you should be OK.

As long as it doesn't show any sign of spoilage like swelling bag or bad smell, it will be safe to eat. MREs are sterilized by radiation, they can theoretically last for decades since there are no bacteria whatsoever in there.

I've got some REALLY old stuff in a box in my basement ... haven't gotten around to chucking them out (some of these are from the 80s/90s), but everything I keep coming across is ... well, maybe but maybe not.

While it is rare for bacteria to grow inside of a sealed MRE - it's possible - rare, but possible. If there is any damage to it, I wouldn't even consider it. If you have any doubt (smell, texture, color) - get rid of it.

A modified 'caveat emptor' applies ... comedenti cave - eater beware, or 'eat at your own risk'.

CANNED goods are virtually without an exprie date ... only a "best by" date. I imagine MRE's are the same ... they'd only lose what (little) taste they have.
In Nam we had C-Rats (canned stuff that was actually pretty good, at least compared to MRE's!) that were from the Korean era.

While in Vietnam, 1969, most of the C-Rations we ate daily were left over from WW2, If I remember, the newer ones had better canned fruit and the peanut butter from Dotham Alabama was much better.

In the early 80's I was eating C-ration that were made in the late 60's. So, I am sure that the MRE is just fine. In the C-ration the only thing you need to avoid was not to eat the Blackberry Jelly that had been sitting out in the sun for hours.

Back in 1999 while in Germany, had an MRE hat had M&Ms in it. On the package it said I could win tickets to the Olympics...In Seoul. That was 1988. The doctor certified the MREs and then a few of us ended up with food poisoning.

I think MREs is ingenious because this may be Elon Musk and to a large Paradigm shift where it will be cost effective. Tesla is the true driving force behind what see today. The MRE will be standard with due dates, extending shelf life of food. Trust on this.

Storage and Shelf Life Checks How long MREs last depends on how long they are stored and at what temperatures they are stored. At the least, they'll last 1 month at 120 degrees F. Or they could last 60+ months at 50 degrees F.

As long as the package is intact, I wouldn't be too concerned. Don't squeeze the food into your mouth and accidentally ingest the bag exterior printing & color. It could give you explosive diarrhea.

Well! Beans and beef what could possibly happen? In the 1980 I was eating C rats from the WW II, loved peaches. I guess I was spoiled by C rats because I never took a liken to MRE except for the fruit of course. You must be full of nostalgia to want to take a chance eating a decade old black beans

Finally, a topic worthy of discussion here (some have gotten way off base lately)!

I've eaten one and portions of them (chocolate covered cookies) that were 15+ old. They tasted good and I was fine afterwards. As others have said, bloated packaging, smells bad, tastes bad, looks oddly discolored versus just age discolored, damaged packaging, chuck it; otherwise, you will be just fine.

Don’t know about MRE ‘s, only ate them a few times, terrible. Now C rations, I ate and smoked WW II, and Korean conflict fruit cocktail, Pall Mall cigarettes, beans and franks, pound cake, chocolate powder, and more in Vietnam.
