I’m a 25 y/o E4 68w. With a 296 PT score out of AIT. My first duty station will be Ft. Irwin. I have heard that this is a good place to train for selection. My question is, will i have the chance to try out for a slot for selection

There are no slots for selection, that's not how it works. Train up and talk to an SF recruiter. SFAS is a higher priority to the Army than NTC rotations and even your command cannot prevent you from attending.

Lots of great and legit advice being given to by fellow RP members. SFC Jason Boyd breaks it down in my opinion, the best. SPC Eric Hurdle also has the great advice, keep training. My advice on training is don't over do it and don't burn yourself out.
