Will the Military as a whole move from Windows 7 to Windows 10?

I just Upgraded to Windows 10, as today was the first day of the free upgrade. They have removed Internet explorer completely and created a new system called Microsoft Edge. I was wondering if the military was going to upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10, even knowing that the Internet Explorer was now gone. I know almost everything in the Army for schools runs off of internet explorer, how will this change affect how the Military does schooling online?

SFC Private RallyPoint Member - we can only hope. Windows 8 was a miserable failure - luckily the Army didn't bother with it. I'm sure there will be plenty of technical issues to work out before the migration, but as with all their products, M$ will end support for Winblows 7 at some point in time.

Yes as soon as all the bugs are worked out of Windows 12 :-) although supposedly MS is ending with 10 and will simply keep updating it and not renaming it. Windows 8/10 are too oriented towards tablets/touch screen and less towards a desktop OS and for this reason MANY companies are lagging behind in making the switch. My company JUST updated to Win 7 and that is an ongoing nightmare and a half the way they are trying to lock everything down.

It will be some time as the servers and security issues running a new OS have to be resolved. That's why XP hung on so long. I think the MS strategy of continual updating is good, but the military needs to freeze the system and not have to do the security drill every month. We'll have to see how DISA etc. wants to deal with it. For the High Side, that will be even longer.

we will get there, and we will waste money using 8 for a little bit as we did with Vista, my unit had Vista for less than 6 months!

There are a lot of good things in 10 that, if used correctly, will be of great advantage to the military.

SFC Private RallyPoint Member I don't think we will make the switch until a new version is on the horizon, seems to be the norm. I just wish I had a computer that could accomplish more than one task at a time.

If they do it will be a long way down the road. I hope that assuming 10 works well that they upgrade to it over 8. The squadron I was at back at Scott was preparing to upgrade all computers to 8 and I am so glad that I left before they did. An OS designed for a tablet does not work well on a desk top, especially with what we used computers before. I only see problems coming from that upgrade.

I'm looking into getting a new laptop but need something that is compatible with Army websites and programs. Are Windows 8.1 or 10 compatible or just 7 and older?

Windows 10 still has internet explorer.
