Each metal detector has a range it can be set at for what it will detect anything outside of that will be missed. Metal detectors in all public places will not stop all attacks, with each advancement in one direction there is an advancement in the opposing direction as well. For example weapons made entirely of plastic is a growing trend. Congress has recently pushed to ban the manufacture of these weapons. The advent of 3D printers has opened up a new security risk. The worlds first fully functioning downloadable 3D printed weapon was made available in the spring of 2013. I realize 3D printers are currently not readily available however neither was the computer when it first came on the market. There are low end 3D printers and high end ones, you don't have spend large amounts of money to possess one. There are versions available which you can purchase and assemble yourself. Sorry to sound all gloom and doom, we need to be forward thinking.
