Will you wear your Drill Sergeant campaign cover for as long as you are assigned as a Drill Sergeant or only when actually training someone?

For instance, if you are not training anyone will you wear your patrol cap with the ACU, or will you always wear the campaign cover until you are relieved of Drill Sergeant duty.

Really depends on the policy of your base. During winter we wore pile caps. When I went to my advanced NCO school I wore my campaign hat.

There are times the drill is authorized to remove the campaign hat, it is simply tied to the type of training that occurs. Thank you for your service.

The "Smoky Hat" is a distinctive part of the DI's uniform- and is the headgear for them as long as they are on status.
