That is definitely not an original saying, but I can't tell you how many times I used that in my military career! I still use it with my daughters today (3 of them). Every once in awhile I sneak one in with the Commander General (The better half) and then take cover!Response by COL Mikel J. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL, the best advice I received in the military came from COL(ret) Alton R. Barnes. He's a WWII veteran (CIB), retired as the Deputy Adjutant General of the Alabama National Guard and has been a lifelong mentor for me and for countless others. His advice came in the form of a poem, and you may have seen this on another discussion thread. He recited this from memory to hundreds and hundreds of officer candidates. It really requires no explanation.

"The Guy in the Glass"
by Dale Wimbrow (c. 1934)

When you get what you want in your struggle for pelf*,
And the world makes you King for a day,
Then go to the mirror and look at yourself,
And see what that guy has to say.

For it isn't your Father, or Mother, or Wife,
Who judgment upon you must pass.
The feller whose verdict counts most in your life
Is the guy staring back from the glass.

He's the feller to please, never mind all the rest,
For he's with you clear up to the end,
And you've passed your most dangerous, difficult test
If the guy in the glass is your friend.

You may be like Jack Horner and "chisel" a plum,
And think you're a wonderful guy,
But the man in the glass says you're only a bum
If you can't look him straight in the eye.

You can fool the whole world down the pathway of years,
And get pats on the back as you pass,
But your final reward will be heartaches and tears
If you've cheated the guy in the glass.

*moneyResponse by LTC Stephen C. made Jun 6 at 2015 2:37 PM2015-06-06T14:37:54-04:002015-06-06T14:37:54-04:00SFC Private RallyPoint Member728784

I try to always remember, "Pointing a problem without offering a solution is just bitching".
