With news of Ryan leaving congress this year, what will be the "new" vison, leader, and agenda of the Republican Party going forward?

That's a helluva good question. You'd think that Republicans or their leadership could best answer it, but I wouldn't bet on that. For as much as I don't like the ideology of the Left and their shills in the Democratic Party, they at least have a direction. Nancy Pelosi, whom I thoroughly despise, at least demonstrated a remarkable ability to manage her minions (much like herding cats). Since the election of President Trump, the GOP has been acting like someone tossed a grenade into their midst in the Congressional cloakroom, and they are scattering, leaderless, and rudderless. In all fairness, We the People have given them little opportunity to govern, which may explain their lack of ability. The bottom line is that it will remain a helluva good question and we must wait to see the outcome. Anyone who thinks they can supply an answer has an over abundance of hubris.

It’s an unanswerable question. In all probability, the next top House Republican will be in the minority and will have limited power, like Pelosi. Should another upset occurs and the Rs keep control of the House, who is voted in will tell us more of the same, or a return to conservatism.

There are a lot of Veterans running in 2018 and the next House Speaker could be one of them as well. I think a good chunk of the House is going to be new people after 2018

Your question deals specifically with the GOP, so I will address that, even though I think the Democrats have a similar issue on the other end of the spectrum. The GOP continues to be locked in a war within itself, with "traditional" republicans pulling in one direction and "Trumpsters" (many formerly known as "Tea Party Republicans") pulling in the other direction. The traditionals are trying to pull back toward the center, while the Trumpsters are pulling toward the fringe. For as long as Trump remains in the White House, his followers will prevail. Many of the traditional types are bailing out, or will be voted out. This is a sad state of affairs, since most of the country, IMHO, would rather be near the center.....either slightly left, or slightly right. We won't be seeing that for quite some time.

Hopefully better than Speaker Ryan. Mr. Ryan started off good in policy, but then it seems he was turned to the dark side of "This is the way we work here". Hopefully the next speaker will have a bit more backbone.

Tough question especially since we don't know who'll have the most influence; the next Speaker, the head of the RNC, or the Freedom Caucus. Looking at the two current front runners: McCarthy who definitely falls in line with Trumpism and Scalise who leans towards conservatism aligned with the Freedom Caucus. Add that Ryan wants McCarthy to succeed him and for Scalise to endorse McCarthy leads my opinion the party is moving to characterize itself as the "Middle White Working Class" party. Fiscal conservatism is dying. Redefining what it means to be an American is the new socio-political agenda. The new economic agenda will place burden on the states to engage in privatization in order to sustain themselves.

Reality check, both parties have worked hard to eliminate the middle ground moderates. Here is what we are left with: Nancy Pelosi and her third term as Speaker of the house come January assuming the GOP gets its butt handed to it. Senate will flip and the White House will get absolutely nothing done.
