Sure the Air Force sprung from the Army and the Marine Corps and Coast Guard sprang from the Navy and these two were always separate but they did not have the same objectives, thus they did not need the same training.

Sure, there are positives like the bct being more uniform, elimination of 5 rank structures and converged into one, convergence of jobs into one set.

But the negatives outweigh the positives. One command structure means one way of thinking rather than giving multiples, far too much confusion in the transition and merging of five forces and the need to bring what would not be substandard forces up to what would be the combat minimum.

The UCMJ has nothing to do with making the military all alike, but rather creates and codifies laws that are the same across all branches. The Army, by itself, has 5 different locations with different training plans at some of them. It would be impossible to train a generic plan that would help proficiency. You would get a lot of poor trained service members. A Navy shipdriver is expected to command an Army brigade in land operations. Expect a Air Force Officer fighter pilot to operate off a carrier.
A basic principle within the Navy Officer structure is that all line officers are to strive for command at sea (this has been somewhat modified). We have surface (Cruisers, destroyers, amphibious), carrier and submarine sea going forces. Each has specific missions and capabilities that are far different from an Army or Air Force order of battle.

Now an individual joins a “one force” system...more so than Canada. Is there one boot camp that will school a member for service in all aspects and later specialize? So in basic does the person learn basic what ? Shipboard life is not nearly the same as in Army or Air Force. Look at the Marines, they have (or did) the crucible at the end of boot. Would the Marines save that for after boot or would all go through it and at the expense of learning shipboard firefighting? Why in the world would the other services take time for shipboard firefighting at the expense of something essential to their mission?

There was a time when the Navy was in jeopardy of losing its air arm to the Air Force. A B-52 pilot commanding a carrier??? Even this destroyer sailor would dread that.
