With the new regulations on enlisted dating what problems do you see coming of this?

Edit: the army just came out with details saying that E-5s and above cannot enter relationships with E-4s and below and if they are in a relationship with one already they have a year to get married. Also they still have a year if one in the relationship gets promoted to E-5 while the other doesn't.

More government interference into private lives = highly dislike. It's none of their business what you do on your private time so long as it does not interfere with the good order and discipline of the unit. The ACLU should have some fun with this one.

One of the biggest problems I'm seeing is the lack of publicity this significant change has received. Believe it or not, I don't reference AR 600-20 that often.

When the prohibitions on officer/enlisted relationships were imposed in 1999, I was formally briefed with my entire company. That happened prior to the effective date. I've seen nothing like that so far for the current policy.

I'll admit to not having read the reg, but it sounds like they are drawing a line between NCO and Junior Enlisted. Here's a question: what about Corporals? Can they date other NCOs (SGTs and above)? Can they date other Enlisted (E4s in particular)?

If they aren't harming the unit/service, should I have to care?

In general I think we really need to stop and remember "the spirit of the regulation" and let it govern instead of making the "letter of the law" cover every potential negative situation. I believe we need to quit making big solutions to small problems. I should trademark that phrase. I have a feeling in this "new fiscally constrained environment" it is going to catch on.

Questions:
- What did the old rules direct or limit?
- What will the new rules direct, limit, or prohibit?
- What will be the intent of the new rules?
- What "new regulations"? AR XX-XXX, page XX?
- Once the above are laid out then there can be an educated and informed discussion as to what problems the regulations will create (or solve).

In my opinion, the new regulations were set in place for the same reason you place a lock on a door... To keep honest people honest.

The violators of the new/revised regulation, will be the same SM's that were the violators before.

This reminds me of the change of rules concerning Officer and Enlisted dating/marriage. Things seems to have worked out then, they will now. Don't go doing the high hurdles over molehills now.
