Within the Army Reserves, does a soldier still have to show up to drill after their contract is over?

No. Here is how it works. When you reach your Active Reserve ETS date, you are then transferred into the Inactive Ready Reserves. But this is only for your initial contract. If you had re-enlisted, and served past the required 8 years of service, and you reach your new ETS, then you are done and done and never have to show again unless it's to turn in all of your CIF.

Unless the Soldier re enlisted or extended, I would think the answer has to be no.

This can be a sticky issue. If the unit you are assigned is under a stop loss then you may have been involintarily extended. I would definitatly check with the 1st Sgt before you assume because you are beyond your ETS that you can just walk away.

No, as others have stated once you reach your ETS Date you are placed in the Individual Ready Reserves to finish you eight year obligation. Being placed in the IRR can have its own dangers because when MOBs and deployments were going hot and heavy most of the back fills for Units were coming out of the IRR.

When you indicate that your contract ends are you referring to your select reserve obligation or your 8 year obligation? You aren't automatically transferred to the IRR after your select reserve obligation is over. You need to do the proper paperwork so you get IRR transfer orders otherwise you're going to keep showing up on the books.

No. However, a request for discharge must be submitted and approved; effective the date of discharge. Ofcourse with all Army enlistment contracts covering eight years, active and inactive time should be arranged with the initial enlistment contract. A soldier will continue to be counted as a member until the unit receives word the soldier is discharged or transferred to the IRR.

Short and quick answer is no. If you know when your active reserve obligation is up, you should notify your leadership and in this case your Unit Administrator or HR person know that you are coming near to our ETS. This will allow them to process your paperwork, get your IRR transfer orders from USAR Control Group, and off the unit books. A new thing that they have done is to affiliate you to a unit for admin support that is within commuting distance. Annual musters will still come and you will get those orders as well. Also, there have been Annual Musters which included medical exams as well and took all day.

I have to say the reserve is loosing a darn good soldier, if you're this concerned about it. In my observation it's pretty common for soldiers to AWOL their last drill.
