I'm wanting to avoid mistakes I saw as an XO and from what I heard happened from other units. Your input is much appreciated. So far mine is going well but a minor hiccup today slowed us down because the layouts weren't done correctly. Shortage annexes were inaccurate with items missing from BII/COEI. Where one platoon shows me their equipment and then the next, and so on... BUT because 2nd PLT was missing an item they borrowed 3rd PLT's and then swapped it back before 3rd PLT was inspected,

The solution I found was a by item inventory, where all the PLs/PSGs went a got a particular item, the the next, then the next, all at the same time. I grant you it isn't fool proof, and nothing replaces attention to detail (model and serial numbers) But it lessened the risk of such shenanigans.
