I am currently a specialist and a 68W. I have been in the army for 2 and a half years. My unit offered to send me to 68A Biomedical Equipment Specialist school to get a second mos. When I was in 68W school I saw soldiers at times with a prior service patch. Would I be considered prior service and what is different about being prior service at mos school in fort sam?

You would be considered Prior Service MOS-T status when you get to JBSA. You will be afforded different/more freedoms than the IET students. Those patches you saw...if they were on the right sleeve, that just means they were deployed. You will continue to wear the patch of your current unit on your left sleeve at AIT.

Thank you SFC. I didn’t know if it was only for people who have separated from the military and then decided to re-enlist into a different mos or someone getting another mos on top of the one they are currently holding.

You are a reclass. You're still currently in service getting a new MOS.

There are no patches specifically for prior service.

The Department of Defense definition for "prior service," is not standard as each of the services defines prior service (for enlistment purposes) differently. The Army defines "prior service" as any applicant with more than 180 days of military service, or those who graduated from military job-training (MOS/AFSC/Rating), regardless of time-in-service.
These are personnel that have served, got out, and are trying to comeback (enlist) under a new contract.

Yes you would be considered prior service. From what I have read you will have less restrictions. I am supposed to be going for 68A in December. There is a prior service patch that is worn on fort Sam Houston. I have seen the same thing. I think they just use it to be able to designate non IET personnel.

Thank you! I know there is no such thing as a prior service patch outside of AIT schools. I’ve watched several videos about 68A school and although it is long the hardest thing about it seems to be keeping motivation up.

You're welcome. I really think it's just so they don't have to enforce the rules that they do with the new soldiers.

I agree, as long as you keep pushing forward, actually concentrate, and do some studying I think you should do fine. Do you have a class date set?
