I was the smartest guy in the class, back in the days when it wasn't "cool" to be smart so I caught a lot of flack. I went back once about 10 years ago for the funeral of a friend's mother and many of the people didn't even recognize me. They were like, "who is this guy?". And when I told them who I was they were like "No way". I had fun. It was strange seeing classmates with children as old or older than they were when I last saw them.

I was surprised that many of them were no farther along at life than they were as teenagers; choosing to stay in a dying small Vermont town. I had gone away to college on Long Island, knocked down the Berlin Wall, gone to SWA twice and been stationed in over a half dozen states in those twenty years.

I missed my 30th reunion because it was my daughter's high school graduation. There was a 35th reunion this past summer, but I followed it on facebook instead of going. I didn't go to my 25th because I was training up to go to Iraq, but the rotation was cancelled. Would have tried to get to the 20 year but was overseas. I was not the most popular, nor was I an outcast. I have found that people have matured and changed to a large degree. It was fun to catch up. It is a room of potential surprises. Some of the encounters....one guy I didnt remember now produces pornography, seems happy. An old friend was a District Attorney then left for private practice. Another friend who seemed directionless was the he VP of a Bio Engineering firm earning dual degrees in electrical engineering and biology/pre-med. a good friend started as an RN and is now an MBA and a VP of a medical device company. Another friend became a mechanical engineer and she is head of construction for a supermarket chain. A few of us served. There are a few that had promise that went no where. Some Al Bundy's, peaked in their Polk High Football careers. 99% were kind functional adults that seemed genuinely interested in sharing their experiences and indulging in mine. All were genuinely thankful for those who served.

Like it or not, the people you went to high school with, you are uniquely bonded to. Not like in the service, no where near that close, but more intimate than most people.

Most of my classmates had not left the immediate area. Because I left the confines of the the I 495 loop it was like I died. My class was about 325. Small enough that you know about everyone but not so small that you stand there and listen to each other blink during the reunion. I enjoyed it. The last one was not as fun because I couldn't get it so my wife could go. My wife was funny at the 10 year. She grabbed one of my friends and interrogated him about which girls I went out with or had a crush on.
