Would you encourage your children to go into Active Duty, the Reserves, or no military whatsoever? https://www.rallypoint.com/answers/would-you-encourage-your-children-to-go-into-active-duty-the-reserves-or-no-military-whatsoever

I'm just curious because there are many different opportunities for either option. I personally was encouraged by my father to join the Army after high school but I rebelled and wouldn't hear of it to save his life. It was only after I completed a year of college that I decided to join and then 2 weeks later called my father from Basic training to surprise him. I decided to join the Reserves for myself and I used my benefits to complete my college education so it has been extremely useful towards that end. There have been times though that I regretted not simply joining Active Duty.

I have a son who is almost two years old now and I think that in the future I would encourage him to do the same as I did.
Mon, 21 Apr 2014 14:57:47 -0400 Would you encourage your children to go into Active Duty, the Reserves, or no military whatsoever? https://www.rallypoint.com/answers/would-you-encourage-your-children-to-go-into-active-duty-the-reserves-or-no-military-whatsoever

I'm just curious because there are many different opportunities for either option. With that said, I honestly believe the country needs all youth to serve or at least train for a national defense strategy and well a lot of us learned a lot about ourselves and others that we were sheltered from growing up. Does one truly know what they want to do at 17 or 18? I think the training and service for let's say two years would be beneficial to any and everyone. Of course reading threads here, you can see with a volunteer service the issues that arise, just think of a mandatory service issue.

Back to the question, I am proud of her for her choice, however I had nothing to do with it but live as an example and obviously caused indirect influence. I had a lot of conflicts because I try to live a moral and holy life. I would not look at pornography, would not touch alcoholic beverages, did not do any recreational drugs, shunned rock music and never used profanity. Ultimately, I was sent to a Navy psychiatrist because my command believed I was insane when I said that rock music is Satanic (my command told the psychiatrist that I said I heard Satan speaking to me through the ship's intercom). Navy personnel come in a wide variety, but cheating, thieving, fornicating and general perversion are common, even in the command ranks. The Navy psychiatrist told me that I'm not crazy, but she also did not believe I was compatible with the military. So, I was kicked out of the Navy and cannot rejoin.

In my opinion, things have only gone downhill since then. Now, the military places open, practicing homosexuals in positions of authority on the confines of a ship. I would have discouraged my children from joining the military back in the '80s; I sure wouldn't want them in the military now! Oh, by the way... I was sexually assaulted by a pair of drunk sailors returning to our ship, and regularly sexually harassed by sailors aboard ship. I joined the reserves while I was still in college. I started out as an E 1 with a submarine unit. I got paid and it was interesting, my first underway on a sub was right after Thresher went down with all hands. After college I applied for OCS, by then I was an E 4. I went through OCS and went on active duty as an Ensign O 1 and retired as an 0 5 with 26 years. I have had an interesting time serving on submarines, destroyers, small boats, cruisers and command centers. The later part of my career was more R&D type stuff than operational but working with intelligence type systems.

There were times when I was frustrated of course. I am a Viet Nam vet and was there when the Pueblo was captured by the North Korean's and nobody did anything. It made you wonder if anyone cared but then I cared and that was all that was important. Now the environment is different from my observations. We no longer seem to want to win as a country . It seems as if you need to bring a lawyer to a fire fight. People support the troops more than they did in my era, but they still commit them to combat than argue about what the troops are doing. SEALS brought up on charges because one of their captives said they hurt him that sort of thing. I would recommend to my kids that they serve because it is a maturing process that puts you head and shoulder above your contemporaries. The responsibilities you assume at a relatively young age are amazing and of course the opportunities to see the world and learn are unparalleled. In short it is hard as a parent but unless things drastically change I think reserves and active duty are good. The reason being is that the military gives you discipline and a time to reflect on what's important. There is no blanket statement to that. Some people just simply aren't "made" for college. They won't focus or don't have the motivation at that point in their life.

There are benefits to active duty. For one, you have a job, you have a way to gain an understanding on some of the world, and a chance to find out if they can find out their passion.

As for me, I personally have no regrets joining the Reserves. I went through college, had my degree, and direct commissioned as an officer/nurse. So I am doing my same-ish job, and I have the military side of things. However, the Reserves lacks heavily in many areas of outside support networks. If there is trouble finding a job, if you suffer a family loss...many of these areas are less established in the Reserves (the NG does a better job of "Family" than us). Often times Soldiers are given very little guidance on how to develop their careers, so they must find this out on their own. As a 27 year old nurse with college education, I STILL failed to 100% maintain my own career, as I was given ZERO guidance for around 4 years of it. As I discovered what I was missing, THEN I could begin working to advance. (It nearly ended my career).

Additionally, not everyone belongs in the military. There are people that simply lack the discipline or commitment. While I would love to make a 2 year stint in the military a requirement ....there are some drawbacks to this idea as well.
v/r,
CPT Butler CPT Private RallyPoint Member Mon, 02 Mar 2015 19:29:57 -0500 2015-03-02T19:29:57-05:00 Response by SGT Private RallyPoint Member made Mar 2 at 2015 7:37 PM https://www.rallypoint.com/answers/would-you-encourage-your-children-to-go-into-active-duty-the-reserves-or-no-military-whatsoever?n=507559&urlhash=507559

Since I have no kids, I really don't have anything in this, but I think every person should do a military stint for at least 2 years right after high school. I think the best thing about joining was the I was able to have all my degree's up to my MBA paid with for TA, working on my Doctorate with my GI Bill, going overseas both in Korea/Iraq (been overseas 10 years before as a military brat), meeting various mentors that would have been difficult to find in the civilian world, meeting my spouse, paid for my spouse's college with the MYCAA and half the GI Bill, and overall... being proud to serve in our Armed Forces.

The biggest accomplishment was for my father who was a retired 1SG, seeing that I made it to the rank of SSG... attended my OCS graduation with my grandfather (who was barley able to work in Witchita, KS in the 1950's with a special badge due to his race) and having him see how far his family has come before he passed away in 2012. My goal is to set the example for my little one. Photo is from 2010. However, my husband brought this up as we are both serving in the Navy. He said "If she wants to join the military I want her to go in as an Officer. None of this enlisted crap like you and I." My thoughts however, were quite different. Whatever she decides to do, if she joins, is her own choice. I wasn't pressured to join by my father who served before me. I just asked him for his opinion on the matter and what I would be expecting. Even with all the knowledge I got from my dad and my grandpa I still never know what to expect. There have been times I wish I had done the reserves or hadn't joined at all. If I could go back in time to change things I would still join, just be a little smarter in some of the situations I got myself into. In the end it's my daughter's choice, not mine. I will be there to support her every step of the way. Parents probably should not be discouraging, but I think expectation management is in order so the kid understands what hey are getting into. I did this for my brother who had grandiose ideas, thinking he wanted to go and become some hotshot combat troop. I explained for several hours all of the unromantic facets of military service. I found an honest reserve recruiter who had been a prior life infantry type that explained all of what a combat soldier does and what is expected of them. Told him the not so glorious side of military living for junior enlisted. He had talked to recruiters before I intervened with all these ideas that he could be a special ops type if he wanted to. They didn't lie but obviously they did not get into too many details of how ones gets into those jobs. Frankly my brother was not mature enough to even think of this. I made it a point to get him into a career that would be marketable for when he leaves. He opted for a medic position in the Navy with a possible prospect of working with the Marines. This was sort of a compromise, in his mind he could pursue something more challenging. At the end of the day he ended up doing neither. He was medically disqualled in the process. Answer for myself? Answer for her? This has been a great experience for me.... Even when it was crappy. I would prefer her to get a fantastic degree and stay safe inside doing a job she loves as a civilian. But if she truly wants to join, I will support her (and cry daily in the shower where it doesn't count). I would make sure she gets the opportunity I didn't get and research what she's interested in so she has no illusions about her options and what those choices would mean for her both short and long term. That includes the possibilities of danger versus lack of mental stimulation and interest in her job. But look at this face..... Please choose a nice safe stimulating desk job. He retaliated by inviting the recruiter out for drinks and got him drunk enough to sign the papers for him anyway. That was WW1. There has been a march into the services every generation since.

That said so you know where I'm coming from, I encourage college first. I think even a two year degree is helpful for achieving in civilian or military careers. The military agrees as they gave me E-3 status to start out because I'd done 2 years of college. My sons are 18 and 21. They have both considered joining the service at one point or anther. My eldest went in full charge after HS to get into the nuke field, but couldn't pass the math test. He is now plugging away at undergrad engineering courses. Noises have been made about going back to the recruiter when he gets his Associates. As we all know Military Service is not for everyone. I myself should have waited a year or two before joining, that being said I do not regret my choice, however I would say go Reserve first its only a 6 month yime in Uniform at the base enlistment( 1 weekend a month, 2 weeks a year x 6yrs = roughly 6 months) if it suits you its easy to transfer to Active, not so easy the ither way around.
