Would you recommend reclassing to an MOS that is out of your field? Do you think it matters?

I'm an IT guy, but I've always had a dream of flight (my original intentions were 15T and reclassing to 153A). Would you recommend someone who is proficient in their field (civilian) to reclass to something that is not?

Of course. If it's what you wanna do then do. Gonna go out on a limb and say most aviators came from other fields.

I am an IT guy myself and I decided to become a Cavalry Scout (even with a GT of 128). Best decision I ever made.

As it stands now i have to reclass but its within my branch. I would but it would definitely have to be something im interested in

I had an Officer in my unit who commissioned from the Infantry to become a pilot. He loves it.

If you're not passionate about what you are doing now, then yes, I would recommend it. The grass is always greener they say, but sometimes it can actually turn out well.

Point to consider, The Army has an IN/OUT Call system to maintain MOS balances (it did when I was still in). It will list what MOS's one can request reclassiificaction into, or out of, by rank. If the MOS you are trying to get out of is under strength, or the MOS you are trying to get into is over strength, it would probably be denied, even as a reenlistment option. Submitting a WO packet for aviation is a totally different process.

Absolutely. It takes you out of your comfort zone and forces you back into learning mode. You will get more college credit and will definitely appreciate your accomplishment when you get through it. Not to mention it will make you look like a Rockstar on your resume.

Take a hard look at the promotion rate in your newly desired Field. It would make no sense at all to get into a dead end MOS with slim chances of progression.

I tell all of my Sailors what I'm going to tell you; what is the first thing you think of when asked what your dream job is? Is it something you can't stop thinking about? Do you see yourself doing the job, and it makes you feel happy? If you answer all of these questions with a yes, go for it. Do everything you can do to make it happen. If you had a second of doubt, investigate the doubt. There is nothing worse on the psychi than what if, or shoulda coulda but didn't.
