Would you recommend retaking the ASVAB?

My soon to be 18 y.o son took the ASVAB at his high school in November of 2018.
His AFQT score is 67 and his line scores are M:43 A:71 G:62 G:60.
He visited an Air Force recruiter this week and was given a list of jobs that have a high probability of being available. He doesn't qualify for some of them because of his line scores. I still don't understand why the line scores aren't available from the ASVAB results but have to be given out by a recruiter. Anywho the recruiter suggested not retaking the ASVAB as he has witnessed more candidates scoring lower after a retake. I believe my son could score higher with study material.

If there are jobs available that your son is interested in, I would highly recommend he stays the course and picks one. I have to agree with the recruiter on this one. He's sacrificing a sure thing for a possibility if he retakes the test.

Lines scores show aptitude for different areas, not sure a retest would help without some study time.

As a former recruiter I will tell you that I have seen the score drop and raise. It depends on the determination of your son. There are ASVAB study books and even prep classes.
However, the ASVAB scores are solid for 2 years. He can not retake it until after that.

So his AFQT is 67 and that is above what I remember to be the national average. That's a good score. I am not a fan of the wording if the recruiter said: "high probability" of being available. Have your son look into the jobs that he is qualified for and he should pick a few that he feels he is best suited for or interested in. He most certainly can take the ASVAB again. I would highly recommend studying for it because I have seen more than a few times where someone has scored lower. If there is job availability for one he likes, then have him go for it. I am a firm believer in " make them tell you no and don't settle. The other side of the coin on that is he needs to be qualified for that job. If he does not qualify for that job I would suggest checking the other branches of service and see if he qualifies for it with them and their availability. All services have different line scores they go off of and for example he may want to be an Aircraft Rescue Firefighter in the USMC but does not qualify and yet he is qualified for it in the Air Force (Yes I have seen this several times and that exact example) and its the same exact school. Good luck to him and his future endeavors.
