I'd hold formation inside and conduct indoor PT.

Before formation, I'd ask the PT instructor that day if it was ok for me to take along whoever wanted to go run in the rain.

If I put them in charge of PT, I wouldn't want to undermine them. I also wouldn't want to miss an opportunity to play in the rain.

Since I am stationed at Schofield Barracks I can relate to the rain situation because it rains almost daily it seems like especially during PT hours. If the rain is heavy we normally zonk everyone because the gym is always crowded. During light rain we just suck it up and do normal PT outside with everyone complaining, lol.

When I was in FA in Germany, everyday was a PT day, rain or shine. Only time a run was cancelled was when we had freezing rain and it was too slippery!

When stationed at Fort Campbell, we loved the rainy day. It was time to hit the woods and run the trails and get as dirty and muddy as possible. Really didn't use the gym as an option because it was usually packed rain or shine. Another option we did was doing some training inside the bay area and then hit the trails for a run.

I must say of all the PT I've done in my career, most I can't remember. But I have never forgotten a PT session or an APFT in the rain. It was some of the most memorable moments and great team building and camaraderie.
It's like "Man this sucks, but we are all out here sucking it up!" Great moments. (just to clarify, I'm talking about big old fat rain, not drizzles)
So to answer your question, do PT.

I don't see any of the choices in the survey. I would simply hold formation inside and have PT indoors. I am not going to use common sense and avoid getting soldiers sick and potential injuries. There is nothing wrong with having formation inside and in the company area or the barracks.

Well lets see, it can't be any worse than monsoon season in S. Korea. We must have conducted PT way too often during my year at Cp Casey. Heck, you could have showered in the monsoon rain and received a better clean up than the showers provided during my time there. Nothing better than going on a 5-6 mile run in the down pouring rain. Our company actually enjoyed it from what I remember.

It would depend on the temperature and conditions that determine if I were to choose PT inside or out if it rained.

The only time PT should change is if it poses a threat to the soldiers... I'm stationed in AK currently and we do PT outside in -20 degree weather... With the proper uniform, PT in the rain is a blast! The only time it sucks is when it's cold.

First of all, this should be outlined in a Company Policy and it is the Command Team, not only the First Sergeant's call. Accountability and Safety are above all and the inclement weather plan(s) should have already been identified in writing though it can be changed with discretion. The only logical answers are B/C, however, B wins because it is a planned action.

I believe that we as soldiers should have to train in all types of weather and scenarios, just cause its raining or snowing doesn't mean the war gets put on hold... train how you fight is what I've always been told.

I've done PT in the rain once or twice. My most memorable is when we negotiated an obstacle course afterwards. going under the concertina wire was a little rough only because the soldier in front of me kept kicking muddy water in my face (it smells like sewage in fort campbell). good times.

I'd go for a run, if it's raining we're still training. I was stationed at 29 Palms most of my enlistment rain was a rare enough occurrence, but in Oki if it's not a typhoon/monsoon go for it anyway. In boot camp our Senior loved to run us in the rain and encouraged us to splash in the mud and the puddles which had a habit of annoying all of our other drill instructors.

I would only give a "ZONK" if there have not been any in a long time. Otherwise, I let the Platoon Sergeants conduct PT with their platoon and therefore I would hold formation and then turn it over to them. If the Platoon Sergeant wants to take them to the gym, then I have no issue. You have to allow the Platoon Sergeant to do their job!

I would need to know more about the weather, the PT schedule, and the environmental resources (track, PT "field," gym/hall, etc.) to make a determination. If lightening is involved, then would find alternatives for safety. If PT activities called for situations that the weather impacted or became an issue, then I would seek other alternatives. I wouldn't make a habit of cancelling PT... sets a standard of only completing a mission when it's convenient, or Soldiers have a communication issue about whether to prepare for PT or not, when's the next formation, etc. Even changing locations brings its own set of logistical and communication challenges. So, with that said, 1. where's the CRM for PT that day? 2. Is the Alert Roster up-to-date? 3. When was it last used/practiced? 4. Have you (Command) established expectations for any mission completion requirements to the lowest level, to include but extend beyond PT? I made a choice for this survey from a fundamental philosophical standpoint, but any situation may become a "case-by-case" consideration.

I am big on constantly checking the weather. If it is light showers. Suck it up buttercup. If it is torrential down pours then I make a call and hold PT at the gym. Usually card PT. That's why I show up 30 min prior to Formation. So I can make the call.

Once upon a time I can remember doing PT on frozen ground in a high profile place. It was so cold I decided to wear my poly pros underneath my old school sweats. I don't think the commander was there to notice my cleats sliding on the ground as my unit played football. Colorado has the potential for some nasty weather so Mission Essential personnel rarely catch a lucky break.

Train as we fight. We don't stop fighting because it's wet and cold. If we are too weak to do pt outside because it's cold and wet then we shouldn't even dare goto war. If your immune system sucks so bad that you can't push past a little cold then maybe you shouldn't be in the military. This is not directed at you btw. This is just my overall opinion on training while it's raining. Lightning is the only thing I would say no to training in. That is a risk that I would not take.

You shouldn't change your plan based on the weather unless it is likely to get someone injured. Runnning trails in the mud and rain is FUN. Now if you have a hump planned and it is pouring and the hills are going to be treachorous because of it I wouldn't reccomend walking up and down hills with 70 pounds strapped to your back you are asking for trouble and somone is likely to get seriously injured.

While I have ran and did PT in the rain and the cold. Ran when the water is so high in the streets that it is come in over the top of your shoes and I got zero from it. What you usely get is alot colds and flu cases. When I was a 1SG, and we would have a good thunder storm and the rain coming side ways, canceling PT was never the option, but I would leave it up to the PSGs what they do with the gym being no option. But whatever they did I would be with them.

If anyone has been to JBLM (Lewis), youd know that rain cant stop pt, or you'd never PT. That doesn't mean you have to do PT indoors, or in summer PT's if its cold out. PT in the rain isn't the problem, its being prepared or adequately dressed that is the issue.

Anyone been to Ft Drum?
Do pt drum when its way below zero, then you'll be begging for rain...because rain isn't snow.

I recall a run years ago when I was in the Navy and my boat had pulled in to Subic. One of those famous Philippine afternoon showers came up and I was quickly soaked. What did I see on my running route but a company of Marines from the amphibious group had was also there. I figured "if these ******* Marines can run in the rain then so can I". Keep in mind that I was a submarine sailor and neither running nor rain were part of our normal operating environment. I finished my run and it sucked every step of the way but for some reason I've always remembered it.

It'd be a toss-up, but chances are, I'd do PT in the rain (unless it was freezing or extremely cold - in which case we'd start indoors, and move out for a run afterwards). I'm not a runner, and I hate running, but of all the running I've had to do for PT, my favorite was to run in the rain between 60º-70º.

There must be new clauses in the enlistment contracts that preclude soldiers from having to fight in inclement weather. I do not remember that ever being a consideration - but then again, with all the chemicals I have been sprayed with, my memory sucks anyway.

You must still hold formation to get accountability. Everyone is wet already. NOW, if it cold out then have the PSGs get everyone somewhere warm and let them get accountability. Then do PT indoors and ensure everyone understands the importance of a hot shower after playing in the rain.

When I was in the 25th Infantry Division, in Hawaii it would rain a lot during PT. I remember one time we was doing a Division run and by the time we was finished the rain was past our ankles it was a lot of fun running in that much rain.

Reading many responses on this website, those who are fully engrossed in a "regulation only" type of leadership, I would say the common response is "train as you fight, shout Hooah and conduct 3 hours of PT". The realistic side, that I see daily is that most cower and run for the gym and duck out early.
My personal leadership style is a hybrid. I believe we have to take a realistic view of each situation, guided by regulation, honed by experience and make a damn decision. PT in the rain all the way to hands in the pockets; its about being an adaptive leader.

We've always ran in the rain in a company, battalion, and brigade run and I've always had a great time because of the atmosphere. That being said if the weather is permitting, as in it isn't 35 degrees outside, I think you should have fun with it and Charlie Mike. However, if it is to the point that soldiers are going to starting getting sick left and right because you made them run in a storm in December it's a bad idea. Training how you fight is great but that decision can easily decrease unit readiness.

Hold formation, hand over the PLTs to each PSG and let then make the decision. It's there PLT and I won't micromanage them, unless CO PT was already on the training schedule then it's what ever PT was already set, most likely a CO run.

Leaders should always have an alternate plan for PT if inclement weather is imminent or poses a risk for injuries. That's why leaders lead and it should sways be by example. Remember the saying "do as I do not as I say"

Rain is not a big deal. Hypothermia is a big deal. I would continue PT as planned unless my gut told me there were some adverse safety issues. Generally anything that sucks has the potential to be a great morale and memory builder.

Given the OP's scenario and location, it's not the rain(God, I have PT'd in the Rain) It's the Lightning. As long as there isn't lightning in the area, PT outside is ON!
OTOH, I'm not getting anybody killed by a lightning strike and I've almost been the one done in on a End of Course run at Camp Crowder, MO, SNCO Academy for Marine Reservists (at this point many years ago) All I could see for a minute or two afterwards was the blinding flash, when I came out of it my fellow road guard was asking if I was OK and the Formation had turned and was nearly out of sight, headed back. Now, I might delay or reschedule a PFT, but PT is on if it's just rain.

If there is no lightning watches/warnings and it is a warm temperature, then we do PT outside and enjoy the rain. If there is lightning or it is cold, then we do PT in the gym.

I remember SGTs used to tell me "if it's not raining we ain't training". I would also take into consideration though if my troops been working really hard and need a day to recover after being in the field for a month straight or something.

After reading many of the post on here, my opinion will be VERY unpopular. If its just drizziling then we stay outside but if its raining hard then I will hold PT in the gym. WHAT! OMG, I cant believe what I just read is probably going through your head or This guy is a douche. Train how you fight you say? Well, we dont fight wars in PT with running shoes on! So once again, light rain means we are getting wet but heavy rain means gym PT.

Having spent alot of time in places where it rains near constantly, there were a higher than average amount of gym days. That being said, sometimes you just gotta suck it up and PT in the rain, its not going to kill you.

I broke my ankle in basic training running in the rain. I actually ran on it for a while before being allowed to go to sick call. It's been 15 years and my angle still hurts until I warm up. Why make things any harder than they already are?

We can get a good burn in the gym. Machismo will get someone hurt.

PT is to keep us up to par and in shape for deployments and health. A little rain is not going to hurt anyone. You don't have to always PT in the rain, some gym days are great for morale.

The question said pouring, so I say take care of the soldiers and for one thing, Def don't have them waiting in the pouring rain for you to hold formation. Now if it was a drizzle or steady rain (not pouring), sounds like a great day for a company run (without the guide-on).

Safety first. Dangerous to be outside if there's chance of lightning. Also, what happens if a Soldier falls and sprains an ankle/breaks a leg? I'd just hold PT indoors.

Rainy PT Story time:
I remember we had a battalion run that got rained on. The LTC decided to move us to a big grassy area instead of running in the rain. Now we were doing exercises in a muddy field. This was in Korea. I'm not sure if you're familiar with Korea, but they have the biggest earthworms I've ever seen. Soldiers were throwing these nasty 12 inch + earthworms at each other while doing PT. That was not a fun day.

It ain't training if it ain't raining!!! I remember doing PT in Germany in the winter and have it start raining while we were on our run. Well the rain almost instantly froze when it hit the ground. We wound up skating back, lol.
