The bonus was given as a term negotiated in your contract. If the government renigs on that contract, they leave themselves in a very actionable position. Uncle Sam's going to get his money. So if you don't pay it back as asked, your credit score will be tanked, you'll have debt collectors hitting you up...<br /><br />Plenty of people tried lawyer time and just wasted a bunch of money. For me to get the bonus it meant I had to sign a contract for reenlistment and that was included. That means it was a legal binding contract between me and the government. You have no choice but to comply, the Gov will take their money back whether you "comply" or not if they feel you owe it.
