I am not exactly sure how to describe this genre of speech but they are the awesome ones that give you cause to smile and remember we're who George Orwell was talking about when he said "Men sleep peacefully in their beds at night because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf."

SSG Private RallyPoint Member, not sure if this is what you're looking for or not, but I consider GEN Douglas MacArthur's "Duty, Honor, Country" speech to be the premier military speech of all time and is generally considered to be one of America's greatest speeches of any kind. He was 82 years old when he spoke and used no notes, having committed the speech to memory. There's not an "um", "ah" or a stammer in the 20+ minute speech. His words are timeless and worthy of continued review and reflection.

By the way, the quotation "Men sleep peacefully..." is commonly misattributed to George Orwell and/or Winston Churchill without citation. The earliest known appearance is in a 1993 Washington Times essay by Richard Grenier, as follows: "As George Orwell pointed out, people sleep peacefully in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf." The absence of quotation marks indicates that Grenier was using his own words to convey his interpretation of Orwell's opinion in other works.

Well, SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL, I agree with you about MacArthur's "Duty, Honor, Country" speech. However, I beat you to the punch! Check out when this was first posted! :)
