Back in 2006 there was time in Bagram, Afghanistan when they took the A-10's away and brought the F-15's and now they are back?

A U.S. Air Force A-10 Warthog aircraft takes off for a nighttime mission at Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan on February 11th, 2014. Still in use - our practices have changed. Close air support is still available but it is more restrictive. The A-10 is a force multiplier that will be used for years if not decades.

1SG- as an Apache maintainer, I can tell you the next best thing to having an Apache or a Cobra support is a Warthog. Those things can carry twice the payload and stay aloft four times the amount the Apache and Cobra can combined. With that being said it is a very old airframe...you of all people should know how difficult parts and keeping an aircraft alive can be difficult at best, and I hope the Air Force looks into a modernization or at least an improved version of the A-10...still one of the most bad ass planes alive.

I am sure on the sheer awesomeness of the A-10 most would say the next best thing to an A-10 would be an Apache or Cobra. I have been around Apaches before and when used correctly they are awesome but there is something awe-inspiring about an A-10 getting down to business.

Plus it is one hell of an aircraft that has performed better than anyone's wildest dreams and expectations.

First Sargent I agree as a current JTAC there is not another platform capable of providing close air support for our troops. The A-10 charlie model is the newest it has a upgraded targeting system providing category two grids good enough for JDAM drops. It also comes with rockets for marking targets. with the long loiter time and different ordinance capabilities it is one bad ass killing machine. Most of the pilots are FAC-A qualified also providing air deconfliction. I hope this air frame stays around for a long time.

SGT (Join to see) - The A10 can take a great deal of battle damage, and every system in the aircraft has a back up system, there is a very strong airframe and the A10s are staying. they were designed for specific purposes and are proven to work quite well at that.

Well this administration is forcing the A-10 to be retired. I am worried about this state of affairs and the work that will need to be done to mitigate this war on the military.

its not retiring, the decision has been made to keep the A10 and upgrade systems within the aircraft.
