I think it would be a good idea, but I'm not sure how the Army will deal with becoming part of the Air Force.

Merge implies that we would allow equality for the soldiers wishing to become airman. They would have to be reclassified, we would have to make sure that their tech schools meet up to AF standards, etc.
I mean, we still have to maintain standards. Perhaps a testing program, and we would allow those soldiers who don't measure up to transfer to the Navy or Marines.

Merging them? Idiotic idea. Look at our World Wars, there is a specific reason for not merging, the force structure of the Army is to conquer continents not hold air bases. They split due to job complexities not for political reasons. I was Army first, then USAF retired. To even suggest that these two vast machines merge is to ignore history, fail to understand complexity, and mission.

I think we would have merged back in shortly after we became our own branch if it was going to happen. We have our mission, the Army has thier mission. We do tend to work together, but being one and the same won't happen.

The two were one service:" Army Air Corp", if I am not mistaken. The military bases are slowly merging and makes good since. The Army and Navy reserve have got on the band wagon as well, sharing space with other service units. Saving big bucks. The services have to pay big money for every building, parcel of land they occupy each and every year. Finally someone realizes the value of saving money.
