I was 32 at the time of my enlistment. Yes, older but I wanted to serve my country as an officer. I had an officer recruiter willing to work with me but my air national guard did not want to release me so I ended up enlisting with the guard. Now , I'm 33. A year has passed. Nothing has been accomplished. I receive offers for officer commission from other bases. I want to take those and go active duty. Now with that year misspent, how do I get an Exception To Policy so I can join an aviation program either Warrant Officer or USAF Pilot/Nav/CSO/WSO?

A1C Ian Williams This will be unique to where you are going. I am having trouble following what you are asking. You were 32 and joined enlisted- an officer recruiter stated they would help you get a commission? Based on what? Your same sentence states your ANG would not release you so you ended up enlisting with the Guard. Not following that logic. You are not specific on where offers are coming from- if they are AD bases- they do not offer slots- the recruiters do that. Other Guard bases most likely have open pilot positions, but you would have to interview and be accepted. You can't take an offer and just go AD as that is not how it works. Your command has to agree to let you go and that starts in your unit with your direct super just to get out of your enlistment. If you received a bonus (as a fire fighter I am guessing you did) you will have to pay that back. Little more to it than just giving you a yes or no answer. The year mis-spent- it normally takes a few years (first enlistment) to be accepted into a pilot program. Do you have your private license- have you taken the AFOQT- what is your degree in... I will be honest- this is not a fast process and I believe 30 is the pilot age limit. Even with the shortage they are adhering to that unless there are some serious benefits to the military.

A1C Ian Williams - You bet- it is not about being the most qualified, but the need of the service. Over 30 requires a waiver and there are others that have served longer, already commissioned, have their private license and they get denied. you have to be in UPT before your 30th b-day. CPT (Join to see) is spot on.

Sorry Ian- I understand your dream and goal. The drone program may have a longer waiver admission for age. In essence I would hunker down and be ready to serve out your enlisted term and decide what is next from there.

Capt Marty Hogan - Yes, sir. What is next is nothing short of Pilot. Even the highest quality of Steel will bend under pressure.

If you have questions, MSgt (Join to see), feel free to ask. I felt as if I was forthright about my situation. I accept criticism but if you only lack more information, just ask. Some service members would find it insulting if you accuse an American who serves his country of obfuscating the truth.

Well in my 33 years of service I've never heard of base recruiting for officers. I find it amazing that after a couple of months in your being recruted if that's true congratulations but I find it unlikely.
And I'm too old to worry about your feelings aiman. So if I insulted you too bad grow up buttercup

SGM Erik Marquez - The age restriction is actually 29 which confuses me somewhat regarding his enlistment age. But it's not my nut to crack.

A1C Ian Williams - I have my moments. I also saw something on here recently saying the AF may open pilot slots to enlisted ranks. If so, I hope you can grab one!
