As a ARNG SM, I don't think civilians employers or the majority of the civilian population understand our role to the nation and how unique our situation is as "citizen soldiers". Many of my civilian friends/employer didn't know the Army had three different components. Do any of you encounter this?

The ESGR is an excellent resource. They have dedicated ombudsmen who can help with employer issues. I've had to get them involved on more than one occasion for some of my troops. Unfortunately there are a number of employers out there who will violate USERRA law and then bully the employee over it.

MAJ (Join to see) - Agreed, ESGR is a great resource. However, if you work for a small business, Soldiers often run the real risk of their jobs disappearing while they're gone. I've seen it happen

I have actually had to take fellow (non-veteran) supervisors aside and explain to them the role of the reserves and national guard and WHY it is important to support their employees that are members of these.

What did they say after you explained it? Did they understand?

Kind of a mixed bag, I guess. There are those that are simply not going to accept that John or Jane have to go to fulfill their obligation to the Guard or Reserve. Fortunately, there are laws and policies that I have been able to use to reinforce my position.

Invite them to your training events especially annual training . Let them see what it is you do. Also invite them to your family day or organizational day to publicly thank them for supporting you and your unit

Unfortunately, even when you have a semi-supportive boss who knows the rules, you get the "wait, you're going again?" and "you sure take a lot of military duty". I can't tell you how many times I have been asked "so this is your two weeks duty?" and I have to explain that the Army Reserve involves a lot more than two weeks a year especially if you are a leader. The unfortunate thing is that you often cannot prove the prejudice that may be in decision makers minds when they are selecting the next person for promotion. They seem to think that if you are taking days here and there, then you must not be dedicated to your civilian job, when the common fact is that you are putting in extra hours on your civilian job so that you can go perform your military duty without letting the civilian performance suffer.

There are also programs to recognize and reward understanding civilian employers. I don't think soldiers know about them too much and leadership needs to be active in bringing it to Reservists / Guardsman's attention. There's a certain amount of PR, but it's worth having employer advocates in our communities.

General, this explains my situation to a T. My company is one of the best when it comes to supporting the reserves. I have even submitted then for and presented to them the ESGR DOD Award for their flexibility. However, they seem to think that it is ok to belittle am employee who works 60 hrs a week for them, and then returns home to feels soldier questions, complaints, and needs. When I took a week of to perform UPL refresher and go to BA I got a phone call from one of the big guns in my division regarding it.

I'm in the Union as i just got sent to another jod as to see this Forman screaming at his men calling them retards and other names .
This mourning he started on me until i asked him to stop before matters became at a whole different level, i guess he didn't care for that for i was told to go home .
I was told about this person getting to my job but as well explain who i was with my so many tours in Iraq and Afghanistan.
As a leader and a soldier i know the rules of having things roll off of your sholders , but to have a civilian talk down to me and make me feel like I'm a POG, "That I can't do!"
I Served in Panama, Gulf War, Iraq and Afghanistan .
Can't handle these people
