There are really only 2 great duty stations, the one you're going to and the one you just left

IMHO..Fort Sill. terrible weather much of the time and incessant artillery fire, sometimes 24-7

All posts are what you make of them. They are only as good or bad as you make them. Some people love some places they have been stationed while others think they were the worst

SPC Arthur Castillo - We were at Fort Polk at the same time. Horrible housing situation there at that time. We bought a mobile home and moved it onto the base mobile home park, which was nice. My family is from East Texas, so we made a lot of weekend trips home to the farm. Fort Hood and Fort Rucker were super nice in comparison.

MAJ David DeMassey - had you told me about the aleutians while I was on active duty, I would definitely ask you who you pissed off.

I was just barely 19 after crypto school and suppose to go to Augsberg Ger., but last minute they changed my orders and two others because they never tell people a head of time about this remote assignment because it was the worse assignment you could have in Army Security Agency (ASA).
But a lot people asked "Who'd you piss off?" when they learned of my orders to Ft. Polk, 5th Mech!

Rita Corpier-Weiss - I did two months at Fort Hood TDY and I liked it much better. Germany for me was the best Aschaffenburg and Schweinfurt.

Ft. Drum is my worst one so far, hopefully Bragg will have a lot more to offer.

In 20 years the I was in, I can say I successfully avoided such thrilling places as Ft. Hood, Ft. Polk, Ft. Sill, and many of the other places. My best tour was at Ft. Greely Alaska, where I learned to fly a HUEY

What makes a place a good or bad place to be varies with every individual. When I was on active duty, some posts were known as "great places to fish and hunt". That meant that there was nothing else to do, and the location was totally out in the boondocks. Some bases were known as being very expensive to live in the area, and to some that meant they were in or near exciting city locations with plenty of things to do, places to go out to eat, etc. I loved my years in the Army, all 24 of them, and never had a bad assignment. If I exclude my year in Vietnam, the worst place I was ever assigned to was ....wait, none of them were bad. The best was my four years at the US Military Academy at West Point, as an officer at the hospital, or maybe it was my 3 years in Heidelberg, Germany, or maybe it was the three years living right on the Chesapeake Bay at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, or maybe my two years at the Army hospital in Aurora, CO, or maybe.....
