I have said here before in a very long post on RP that the Army should emphasize that every Soldier is a rifleman just like the Marine Corps teaches that core philosophy, and that they should fundamentally alter their basic training to adopt many of the mythological aspects and symbolism in being a Warrior of Democracy. The Army's History is chock a block full of wonderful examples where cooks, clerks and baker's with no more than their Basic training, helped defend against getting overrun, whether by the Germans in WWI, the Nazis or Japs in WWII, the North Koreans and Chinese in the Korean War, or the NVA/VC in the Vietnam War, and right up to Iraq and Afghanistan Wars. Army basic training should emphasize the mystique in wearing the US Army Soldier's uniform and the Earning the title of Soldier, and with the specific MOS De-emphasized. The Esprit De Corps should come from earning the right to call yourself "An American Soldier." The saddest thing I ever heard from a recent Army basic training grad was that he did not feel special to graduate from Army basic training ( a feeling he said was common in his recruit training company). Every Marine that graduates from the Crucible and Boot Camp invariably says that next the the birth of their kid, that was one of the greatest moments in their lives. I cannot believe the Army cannot replicate that if they wanted to. Imitation it is said is the greatest form of flattery. I wish my KIA grandfather's Army the very best in Success in improving the way it makes Soldiers out of Civilians.

CPT (Join to see) - Captain, I disagree. Every recruit going through Army basic should graduate as a rifleman. Basic training is where it should happen as an inclusive part of the recruit regimen. For that same reason everyone should PT qualify. How can one be called an American Fighting Man or 7Woman when they can't pick up a rifle and use it? PT capability reduces fatigue and enables any service member to perform better!

I don’t disagree with you. The Army is trying to turn it around with a 22 week Basic with mandatory passage of basic rifle qual and APFT test. It used to be that way in the before the global war on terrorism took hold and SJWs took office. You are right about the rule of threes as well. It was that way in 07 when I went through OCS. It is simple, pride. Correct me if anything i say is incorrect because I am in the army. I have had a few interactions with Marines and one thing ive always noticed is they are proud to be where they are and what they are doing. Im not saying there is no one proud to be in the army because i know of a lot of people that are. But in the marines rank isn't just handed out like the army. Im sure awards are the same way. I have little knowledge on the promotion system for the marines but in my expierence that E-4/lance corporal is one of the most feared NCOs. Where as the army it is handed to you at 2 years at most and refered to as the sham shield. The army is concerned about feelings and everybody is a winner. It is also acceptable for someone who is not combat arms to not know how shoot there weapon. The army concerns themselves with admin far too much and to little on continueing to train in there job or basic infantry tasks. The basic fundamental needed pride. Proud to be a soldier, as well as understanding that a soldier is more than a cook, mechanic, clerk, and truck driver. Supposedly in the army we are soldiers first your job second but nobody from the top down enforces this. Its all about lets keep these guys happy and let them leave at 1500. Our METL (mission essential tasks list) is based on what your unit should be capable of doing. The warrior skills level 1 is tasks that should be annualy trained on but every body forgets about it after basic training. These tasks are things from react to direct fire to land nav. I love being in the army I am proud to wear my uniform and train my soldiers but that is all I can do right now is change my little part of the army.

Just one correction: E-4 is a Corporal; Lance Corporals are E-3s and not NCOs. However, when necessary, a senior LCpl is capable of leading a fireteam in battle, though it is typically a position held by a Cpl.
