A friend of mine started a GoFundMe to benefit Dan Bartholomew, a Coast Guardsman, his wife Maggie and their one year old daughter were driving from Oregon to a new duty assignment in Maine when their truck and their trailer were stolen during an overnight stop in Colorado. All their sentimental valuables were in that truck along with what they need for their daughter. Coast Guardsmen don't fall under Army Regulations, but he should check with a USCG JAG officer to be sure. It would probably be OK even under the AR, as a special and infrequent occurrence.

I remember reading an article not too long ago concerning Service Members and gofundme situations. I would advise the SM to dig into the regulatory guidance very carefully before accepting anything.

Good point SFC James Cameron. I do not know the servicemember, he is a friend of a good friend of mine. One article I saw references service members using gofundme to solve theoir financial burdens. This was started by my friend, not the service member.

SFC William Farrell brother I’d hate to hear of a fellow SM that fell on some legitimate hard circumstances catching some kind of administrative action for getting help. I know that sounds like being put between a rock and a hard place but having to stand on the carpet for accepting help would be adding insult to injury. I’ll look and see if I can’t find the article and pass it on to you.
