I am a big fan. I spend a lot of time explaining to students about our wonderful Coast Guard who does so much more than "just" guard our shores.

The Coast Guard was one of the first responders for Hurricane Katrina aftermath. They saved tens and thousands in a few days after reaching land fall.

I knew several local First Responders who were certainly THE first to be on scene and help rescue people and animals. But for a federal or military response, no one was there faster than us. Admiral Thad Allen, our commandant at the time, took the bull by the horns and mobilized every Coastie and flood punt and helo and plane for five hundred miles. Nobody beat us. Nobody ever does. Thank you, Ken.

SCPO (Join to see) - The Federal Government did a huge AAR on Katrina to formulate new plans. FEMA can't spearhead a cohesive plan. You don't want bean counters to execute a large portion of the Federal Response.

ADM Collins was still the commandant during Katrina. ADM Allen didn't replace him until May 2006.
