SFC Fred Krazeise - The Coast Guard also was the original one to have Patrols up the rivers in Vietnam where they got in real close and personal with the Viet Cong. This was way beyond being off the coast but well inland right into the combat zone. Shown in this picture is a US Coast Guard River Patrol boat in Vietnam. The coast Guard were the first to do this type of patrol then the Navy took that over with thier PR, Patrol Boat River.

CG had a lot of units in Vietnam, small patrol boats like mentioned above, as well as larger cutters that did shore bombardments.
But some real history can be found when you research the Point Welcome, a Coast Guard patrol boat that fell under friendly fire by the Air Force. Killing tbe CO
