I'd love to hear everyone's thoughts on this subject. Should Marine boot camp change? Will the Marines still be the same fighting force if boot camp is "softened?" Do you believe "hazing" occurred in this circumstance in a way that was worse then with any other recruit? Is this young mans death, in your opinion, a murder or is it suicide?

hazing has Been part of Military culture for centuries... In one form or another...

In 1973 when I joined the Corp all others services had ad,s to entice people to join, the Marines had just one (We do not promise you a rose garden). The Marines have never promised anyone a boy scout environment, if you can not take the heat do not join.

I think you can likely tell, by the way my post was written, that I agree 100% with you. I was in boot camp in 1987, no doubt a much easier environment than you faced in 73. However, breaking us down isn't hazing. Exercise as a punishment isn't either. It sounds like he was weak and not meant to be a Marine. (We could joke about what branch or branches he would have done well in.) Overall though, it isn't a laughing matter. I do think that the psych that evaluated him could have missed something but I also think, he might have been a "completely normal individual" who just couldn't hack it. The Marines weren't created with "completely normal individuals" in mind. And that is a fact.

Hazing by Cadre to Muslim recruit who could not handle it. I feel sorry for him. In basic I recall seeing soldier processed out for attempting suicide by drinking Isoporiyl alcohol. If you don't have resilience and cadre is sadistic it's possible sick Marine snapped.
