Anyone else ever get hassled by their employer for weekend/annual drill?
Back in the early 90's, after I had completed my active time and was settling back into society as a reservist, I took a job working at an automotive shop. My boss knew up front that I was a reservist, yet every time I needed to take time off for drill I'd get the third degree. Sometimes he'd even threaten to fire me or make comments such as "Maybe you'll still have a job when you come back" or "Just don't even bother coming back." Being young back then I really didn't know the law or anything as I'm sure he did, but it stressed me out a little. I never hear of this happening these days... anyone else have a similar experience with an employer?

I had a similar issue, albeit not as blatant when I worked for a privately owned company. Gave the USERRA information to my boss and hr director and offered time with our JAG who happened to be a corporate litigation attorney full time. Never heard an issue again. I honestly don’t think they meant ill, they just didn’t understand the law. That doesn’t always work. Every situation is unique.

I was working nights in a bank data center when I joined the reserves in the 80’s got my 2 weeks for ACTDUTRA but…being I worked nights and we flew out monthly to San Diego (North Island) I had to use 11 days of vacation or take time off with no pay… was one of the reasons I did not reenlist when my contract ended. I did stay with the bank for thirty five years and retired. The reserves and my regular job were never to be compatiable if I had stayed in.

Reach out to ESGR.mil. They won't get heavy-handed with your employer, but they will educate him, along the lines of LT Brooks' comment. I feel fortunate to say that I was well supported by my employer over the years I was doing drills, ATs, and even a deployment. Best of luck, Marine.
