I was actually going to go to the Air Force but when I waked into the recruiters building, their office was at the end of the hall. The Army's was at the beginning. Someone says "hey you need some help?" I never made it to the end of the hall.

My father was a pilot in WW2 flew 39 missions in a B17's over germany a day raider . We had a Cessna 182 and a setarbria....Me and would fly all over NE that was in my youth 8-16 years old. The war came my draft number was 12 my day said son you better go sign up so me a 2 of my school buds went to the recruiters office ..I signed up Air Force with one buddy and the other went to the Marines...I wanted to fly but only collage boys to do that..I said to the recruiter I could fly circles around any fly boy at training school right NOW...YES anyone..well no College no fly school..pissed me off..

I love my choice. How many are lucky enough to serve onboard the USS Enterprise!!!

PO2 Jimmy Bones - We had to go to Meto Power to climb up over the Enterprise. We were in EC-121's 50 feet above the water. Navy was not to happy. Also almost shot down two Navy jocks on their way back because they were not squaking. Weapons officer said get a visual. F-4 pilots had a lock-on and wanted o fire.
Navy got lucky.

in 1978 we almost shot down a Navy P3 because it wasn't squawking Instead we launched the alert 5. Tends to get people excited some.

Interesting question.
I had no idea going in, but it was a great choice... I would not change a thing.
I actually tested to enlist in the Navy, but they did not offer Military Police for new recruits (Master at Arms, at that time had to be Petty Officers). I then looked at the USAF as my buddy was enlisting to the be a Security Policeman, but my eyes were not good for the USAF or aviation MOSs in the Navy; aviation was my other option.
The Navy wanted me to go into their Nuke Program, and would not offer much else, so I wandered into to see SFC Jack Webb. He was a Combat Engineer, and wanted me to be Combat Engineer... Luckily my brother had just ETSd and gave me the skinny on what Combat Engineers really do vs. what the recruiter said... I never considered the Marines, as their recruiters were quite arrogant, and condescending about all the other branches in the office complex; all 5 branches in Elizabeth NJ.
I ended up enlisting as an Army MP, and it was the best decision I ever made.
I love the Army, but I know all branches have a purpose, as do all their jobs. I value all service. The Army was right for me and my mentality. I am blue collar type, and the Army is the blue collar work force of DOD, in my view...

The arrogance was an attraction, not a turn off, for me. I was the quiet, mousy one in high school (who am I kidding, I still am a bit) and the idea that I, too, could gain that total self-assurance was pretty cool.

I was told I had two options, Radio Repairman, or Calvary Scout in Europe wanting to go in right away. I asked what Scouts do, she said they make maps. I said you mean I will be able to work as a topographer when I get out, she said sure. I said Europe is a long way from home, she said don't worry, you can apply for transfer back to the states after 18 months. Gotta love recruiters, they are well trained to be in politics when they get out the way they craft statements.
