The USS Anchorage, a U.S. Navy namesake ship named after Alaska's largest city, departed the San Diego naval base as part of a National Aeronautics and Space Administration mission Wednesday.

The Anchorage has been used a few times for NASA missions. I remember when I saw her during Navy Days Los Angeles in 2014 she had just completed one of these missions.

Our historic callsign was NEPM but we did not actually have it when that picture was taken.

For those trained to read maritime signal flags, the four flags that appear on the IOWA’s port side up near the ship’s bridge, spell out NEPM. NEPM was the ship’s assigned radio call sign from 1942 until 1997 when it was stricken from the official register. Later the call sign NEPM was assigned to the US Coast Guard Cutter Heron.
