Related to another post about people's families, I decided to start a discussion about people who come from generational military families. (even if its just one, or skipped a generation)

Through research I have found that I have six generations of military in my family, counting my three kids.

Solomon Wyckoff, G/G grandfather3rd Infantry Reg, Virginia Union Army

Nicholas Wyckoff, G grandfatherWWI Unknown unit or dates

Harry Wyckoff, grandfather U.S.S. Melvin, WWII

Noah Cloud, great uncleUS Army OSS, WWII Unknown unit or dates

Dave Kuster, great uncleU.S.S. Hercules, WWII

Joshua Wyckoff, father U.S.S. Markab, Vietnam

David Cloud, uncle, Army, Vietnam

Samuel Cloud, uncle, Marines, Vietnam

Uriel Cloud, uncle, AF Vietnam

Me

Ben Wyckoff, Eglin AFB Air Force, OIF OEF

Chandilyn Wyckoff, 168th Refueling Wing, Air NG

Cassondra Wyckoff, 108th MP Co. OIF

Is there anything interesting that's military related that you've found out about your family?

Outstanding way to recognize those that have gone before us! Thanks.

Off the top of my head from what we've found in our research of my direct ancestors:

Joe Purvis Jr. - Father - US Army 27 Years - Vietnam, Cold War, Desert Storm

Joe Purvis Sr. - Grandfather - US Army - WWII

One very interesting one we found was on my mother's side, several generations back, I had a direct ancestor who fought for the British against Americans in the American Revolution. He was captured and paroled. After the war he returned to England, then immigrated to the USA. During the War of 1812 he joined the US military (can't remember which branch) and fought against the British!

LTC Purvis,

It's a good thing he was paroled, or you might not be here. and at least your loyalist ancestor got it right in the end.

Thanks for sharing part of your family's history.

Every generation in my family has served both American Military and Spanish Military. My Father was 15 when he joined the Navy during WWII. My Grand Father was MIA for a year and he had malaria, my Grand Mother lit a candle every day.

I had Uncles in Vietnam and my Father was in communications and I started in communications. I had Uncles that were in Infantry, and that were Rangers. I did a study on Intergenerational PTSD, and the impact of childhood trauma. It is vital that you have an understanding of not transmitting PTSD to the next generation by telling the graphic stories to children.

My father and his younger brother served in the Air Force in the 60s. My two other uncles both served with the U.S. Army in Vietnam. My older brothers served in the Reserve in the early 80s. Our sister is currently serving in the U.S. Army with Signal Corps. She has one deployment to Afghanistan. I completed 3 deployments overseas to Iraq and Afghanistan. Served one tour in S. Korea too. Brother-in-law will be an Army Chaplain soon this year. Graduates seminary next week.

CPT, my daughter just did a paper on that subject for her college class. I had no idea that it was even a thing. It doesn't even take telling them the graphic stories to pass it along.
I can see the residual effects now in my kids. Luckily they had their angel of a mother to compensate for me. They turned out great.

It really is addicting, SSG Evans. Once I put my Dad's name in hints started coming in right away.
