He served with Prince Harry in Canada but left the forces in 2013 and a wrote book about his experience called Out in the Army, My Life as a Gay Soldier.

Tragic and disgusting, but it is flaw in human nature. When there is a crowd around an incident, there is lower likelihood of intervention.

The bystander effect, or bystander apathy, is a social psychological phenomenon in which individuals are less likely to offer help to a victim when other people are present. The greater the number of bystanders, the less likely it is that one of them will help. Several factors contribute to the bystander effect, including ambiguity, group cohesiveness, and diffusion of responsibility that reinforces mutual denial of a situation's severity.

Not sure why his sexual orientation became a focus in this article. Sounds like two men got into a verbal altercation that became violent and bystanders chose to watch then intervene. Happens all the time here in the US. Just look up the video of two young women getting punched multiple times by a man twice their size after a verbal altercation. Bystanders watched, recorded, and some laughed. Humanity has lots of issues.
Thankfully this guy wasn’t killed or more seriously injured. Wouldn’t imply or call it a hate crime though.

I don't believe it's being investigated as a hate crime. His sexuality was simply a focus of the article since he was one of the very first gay soldiers to serve openly in the UK military I believe, but yes it was very thankful that he wasn't more seriously injured.
