What were some frightening non-combat experiences in a war zone?

Being in a war zone can be frightening. My three scariest incidents from Viet Nam were were not in combat:
1) I was the FNG at Bunard when there was a huge boom -- violently shaking the teamhouse. I was leaning back in my chair with my head against the wall and it felt I had had just been hit with a sledge hammer. I hit the deck, fearing for my life. My teammates nonchalantly walked out laughing their butts off. WTF? I joined them only to see an F4 Phantom (I'm guessing) buzzing our camp. A sonic boom can mess with your mind when they happen at point plank range. I'm the little kid in the picture wearing a T-shirt and shorts. (hardly "green beret" material -- LOL)
2) A few months later I was relaxing and enjoying the show from a hill as a battle was taking place down the hill from me at Song Be. I was a safe distance away when all hell broke loose slightly above and behind me. It was a Cobra Gunship. I never heard that whispering death sneak up on me. It was firing rockets at the bad guys below.
3) I was alone in a hotel room in Vung Tau with some Communist out on the veranda yelling, "F.U." at me. Believing the best defense in a strong offense I burst through the double doors with my M3 Grease Gun ready to set things right -- only to have a Communist Tokay gecko hanging on the wall stare down at me and repeat, "F.U." It was lucky I already ate or it would have been my dinner for scaring me so.
These incidents only lasted seconds, but were more frightening at the time than the two times I was wounded and alone.

Great post SGT Robert Pryor I would say getting a rocket attack the first night in country (OIF 05-07), the lizards in the desert hiding in the vehicles, and flying into Balad, Iraq in a C-130 and getting painted by a shoulder-fired missile, shoulder-launched missile or man-portable missile and taking evasive action with counter-charges being fired. A few upset stomachs in the back of that C-130 where Cavlar Helmets came in handy like the porcelain toilet (lol).

SGT Robert Pryor - If they are gret soldiers like yourself you deal with them in special ways brother. It is what it is and every situation and unit is different and so are the leaders my friend. Bless you and great share all the way around my friend.

1. Camel spiders chasing you. Big ones. And their fast.
2. More than once, climbed under a HMMWV for some mx. Usually parked in the sand. Came face to face with a horned viper twice. After the second time I kept a broom handle to stir the sand around before climbing under anything.
3. Drove over an anti-tank landmine probably a dozen times with a JD Gator just days after I got to Iraq. Never saw it until after a rocket attack during a UXO sweep. Needless to say I was suprized and happy to have EOD dispose of it.
4. Stepped out of my dorm one morning as the first of 4 rockets flew past. First one was less than 4 feet above my head. Saw movement out of the corner of my eye, turned to see it and hit the deck. All 4 failed to detonate that day but still did damage. 1 hit sewage pipes in a building near me and gave someone a sh!t bath, a second hit the airfield and sent shrapnel into a 6K gal refueler loading a C-130. We only got 250 gallons saved.

Fun times. I'd do it all again.

Good stories Robert.

I was in Olongapo in 1972 on Liberty with some snipes. We were a couple of blocks off the main drag and all of sudden all hell broke loose. Gun fire from two different directions. We can tons quick stop and two gangs of Filipinos were have a slight disagreement just in front of us. We immediately turn and got back on the main drag which was patrolled by Filipino Marines.

I was in Olongapo in 1983 or 84. I seemed a lot more hospitable than your experience, SCPO Morris Ramsey. Maybe I just wasn't in what may have been the bad part of town.
