An analysis of skulls from than 600 ancient and modern dogs and wolves suggests that much of the diversity seen in present-day dogs emerged thousands of years ago. The analysis, together with a study of ancient dog genomes from central and eastern Eurasia — both published today in Science — offers clues about dogs’ origin story, but still no firm answers as to when, where or why they were first domesticated from wolves.
“Dogs, from very early on in their relationship with humans, are a really important part of human cultures and society,” says Carly Ameen, a bioarchaeologist at the University of Exeter, UK, and co-author of one study.

Lt Col Charlie Brown I don't think I could live without a dog any longer. They have been a part of mine and my wife's life since we got married...over forty-five years!

I love dogs! And cats, which my wife can barely tolerate. LOL There are truly Dog People, and Cat People...and people like me who love them both. But I bet if you took a survey (World Wide) Dogs would be in the lead as most loved by a larger margin.

If cats come close it's probably because those who rent homes can get permission for them easier than for many breeds of dogs.

Not sure we need science to tell us that. They're certainly an important of my life, frankly any pet, not necessarily just dogs.
