Great story. Amazing how many famous men volunteered. The Roosevelts served no matter what wealth or prestige they had.

Also, one of the female residents I trained with is apparently, from what she'd said to me at one point, before my total perm disability, is actually a descendant of the Long Island (LI) branch of the family...when she told me, I instantly recognized her facial features as actually resembling Theodore Roosevelt somewhat...she said that when Sagamore Hill is closed once a year by the Natl Park Svc (NPS) for the family reunion, she actually gets to go, as she does apparently actually know most of the major descendants, which I always found pretty neat, ever since she'd mentioned that whole aspect to me, you know?

Ok, had no idea of this, I was a Sophmore in college when this happened, but this made me check my log. I flew this aircraft twice while in B-52 training at Castle AFB in 1970. By this time the only F models still flying were at Castle and only D models with the big belly mod were flying in Vietnam.

I follow, glad it was apparently novel, I'd seen stuff on him doing it awhile back, I'd been meaning to find more on the whole thing since then...and I saw what you sent in on the page about the other site I'd found, I hadn't realized you'd actually been on that same specific plane, that is pretty neat, certainly, as I'd also said on the other page....

Capt Daniel Goodman Knew Stewart had been in SAC but not much more than that. When you're a young 2Lt going through flying training you don't focus much on the comings and goings of generals, even famous actor ones :-)

I follow...the CO of my unit had been an O-2 FAC pilot awarded a DFC, as I'd learned later, he flew 150 missions in them, aside from all his other aircraft, which kinda blew my mind...I got to sit once chatting with him once for an hour, after I got a plaque from him for assisting with getting a good IG rating, he'd made O-7, he hadn't pinned on yet when I got to sit and speak with him...then, too, I also asked a couple of questions of an O-9 who'd been one of the Apollo astronauts, who'd been a friend of the USAF OTS Commandant, when I'd been in the program, all of the engineering/science majors got to attend the discussion....

Capt Daniel Goodman Our wing commander when I left B-52s was a former astronaut. His buddies still with NASA would fly up all the time to see him and would pretty much always give an impromptu speech at the O'club.

The dentist for my family when I'd been a kid had, I gathered, been a B-17 navigator in WW2, and I'm pretty sure he might've actually flown with him, he had a good many photos in his office, that was before he'd gone back for dental afterward, I think he'd mentioned actually knowing him, as I recall....
