I believe without a doubt that we as a nation need to address the deficiencies in our infrastructure. This includes automation, fail over (where applicable), all kinds of issues. I just hope we make wise decisions.

I can speak a bit about transportation infrastructure being a +20 year veteran of PennDOT. I can say back around 1990 there was plenty of transportation funding that could be used for nothing else but transportation. While the politicians couldn’t use it for any of their pet projects, they wouldn’t let us use it to maintain roads and bridges sufficiently because, while they couldn’t spend it, they were using it to balance the books in other excess federal spending they were doing. It still ate away at them that they couldn’t spend it. In the early 1990’s they passed: The Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act of 1991 (Public Law 102-240; ISTEA, pronounced Ice-Tea). This law finally allowed congress and FHWA to spend transportation funding on “transportation enhancements” earmarks. These enhancement projects construct streetscape type projects that don’t add capacity or life to roads and bridges; it can also be used for “transportation related” project like a new roof for an old railroad building, that isn’t being used for the railroad any more. The roof I saw back then cost about $! M. I posted an article earlier this morning that shows their proposed infrastructure spending. I am very disappointed with all the fat in it especially for green energy.

I am sure we will see them take home the most bacon they can. They are politicians, they just can’t help themselves. We will see.

Unfortunately, seeing the past actions of Congress on BOTH sides of the aisle, I find this easy to believe.
