In my opinion it is totally asinine to rename military bases because they were named after historical figures that most people have never heard of. For example, Fort Bragg was named after Braxton Bragg. Most Americans would have to do a Google search to figure out who it was named after. However generations of American Paratroopers and other Soldiers have been stationed at, trained at, mobilized and demobilized at "Bragg" and "Bragg" is part of the modern military lexicon. The name Fort Bragg is only offensive to those looking for a reason to be offended. The same goes with Fort Benning.

I agree that the military needs to take steps to keep the foolishness that the civilian world wallows in out of our organization. I agree that the "Battle Flag of the Army of Northern Virginia" is a hot button topic, and while I support the 1st amendment right to free expression that it's display is protected by, I also agree that ANYTHING, on either side of the argument that can cause a problem with good order and discipline should be eliminated from the military community. So, yes, restrict Confederate flags, but to rename Forts and Bases is foolish, asinine, and will, in my opinion deepen and widen the rift that we as military leaders should be trying to heal.

Can you imagine the cost of this meaningless action. Hope Trump hangs in there and stops it. Any votes lost, would not have been for him. And I’m an Indiana born and raised person with no particular afiniation for anything Confederate. But, am a strong believer in the 1st amendment.

Side note: Braxton Bragg was also hated by the Confederacy during the Civil War. His subordinates considered him to be a toxic leader and wanted him relieved of command. Bragg earned a reputation of incompetence because he missed several offensive opportunities as a commander. After losing multiple battles in 1863, he resigned in disgrace from CSA.

I’d give them two choices. It can either stay Fort Bragg or, if we change it, it can be “Fort Gofuckyourself”. I wonder which one they would pick.
