Here's another example of how Pharmaceutical companies continue to use (abuse IMO) our patent laws, designed to encourage development and competition, to extract extremely high profits while keeping actual competition at bay.

Without defending some of the loopholes crawled through by drug companies, I'd simply note that this quote from the article ...
"Drug-company owners are making millions “on the backs of sick people”
is the flip side of the coin that has
"Drug companies are saving the lives of millions of sick people"
on the other side.
While one would like to think drug companies and doctors are altruistic, as a general rule that's not the way the world works. If one wants innovative research and development, the surest way to get it is to build profit into the equation.
